Despite rains, hundreds of vehicles leave for Srinagar | Fresh snowfall on upper reaches in Kashmir, rains in plains | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 4: Despite rains, hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and essentials for Kashmir valley left Jammu as one-way traffic continued on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, the upper reaches in the Kashmir valley, including health resort of Pahalgam and ski resort of Gulmarg received fresh snowfall while plains, including the summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed rains this morning. A traffic police spokesman said here that the highway remained open despite rains. He said vehicles with passengers and essentials for Kashmir left different parts of the Jammu region. However, no vehicle was allowed from Srinagar. Official sources said there was threat of landslides and shooting stones between Jawahar tunnel, Shaitan Nallah, Ramsu and Ramban areas on the highway following fresh rains. The threat remains even if there is improvement in the weather, The highway remained frequently closed during this winter because of heavy snowfall, landslides and avalanches which claimed 11 lives in the month of February. The frequent closure of the highway resulted in shortage of essentials, particularly cooking gas in the Kashmir valley. Home delivery of cooking gas in the valley, including summer capital, Srinagar was not resumed by authorities yet. The Ladakh region remained cut off from the rest of the state since December 1 last year when Zojila pass was closed for six winter months due to snowfall. The Centre and state governments have approved a project to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make it an all weather road. Dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), also remained cut off with their respective district headquarters due to closure of the Sadhna and Razdan passes in north Kashmir. However, the minimum temperature recorded considerable improvement in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, which remained cut off from the rest of the state due to closure of the Zojila pass since December 1 year following heavy snowfall. A Met department spokesman said here WD, originating from Arabian sea, had finally hit the region and will remain active till March 6. He said with the arrival of WD, the Met department has forecast light rain or snow at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir. The minimum temperature will drop by two notches, he said. During subsequent two days, scattered rain or snow is expected over the state from this evening till Tuesday, he said. Cold revisited the valley though the sun was playing hide and seek. Srinagar and its adjoining areas, after witnessing relatively warm night as the minimum was recorded 4.0 degree, two degree above normal, were receiving heavy rains since early this morning. Many roads were waterlodged due to poor or damaged drainage system in the city, affecting pedestrian and traffic movement. |
