| Weapon modernization in police to be made a five-year programme | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 5: The J&K Government has plans of giving additional cash incentives to those former militants and others who help the security agencies in recovering weapons that had been used by the insurgents during the last several years. Official sources said that during the last 20 years more than 4,000 assault rifles,10,000 pistols and revolvers had been recovered by the security agencies from militants and their overground supporters. This huge catche of weapons has become part of the modernization of weaponry in the police in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said that no doubt the union Home Ministry has cleared a project aimed at modern-isation and upgradation of weapons in the police department the police authorities believe that in case mor e weapons were recovered and seized from the militants and their underground workers the police could be equipped with effective weapons for tackling the activities of rebels. Apart from equipping police personnel in Jammu and Kashmir with sophisticated weapons and other gadgets the Government has decided to make training of men in khaki in the handling of latest weapons and other gadgets a regular feature. A senior police officer, who is looking after trainings, said that the basic purpose of weapon modernization and arms training was to provide all the police personnel with weapons that are invariably handled by men in the Army and the paramilitary forces. In reply to a question the police officer said that besides the requirement of raising at least 50 additional companies of police there was need for providing the police personnel latest weapons so that the police force could replace the Army and the paramilitary forces as far as the task of t ackling the menace of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir was concerned. The state Government has requested the Union Home Ministry to make weapons moderni-sation programme for police in Jammu and Kashmir a 5-year long programme so that by the end of five years the police force was competent and ready enough to replace the paramilitary forces. |
