Kishtwar, March 5: After refusing to hand over power projects to the state government; the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) has restrained the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) from executing a water lifting facility for Kishtwar town. Pertinent to mention, the 2.5 Cr water supply scheme provided by the National Hydro Electrical Power Corporation (NHPC) to Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas as good will gesture failed. The PHE Department in a bid to provide a suitable alternative started work on the water lifting scheme from 390 MW Dool-Hasti power project in Kishtwar District. The proposed project was declared by the state government as prestigious and important. May 2012 was set the deadline for its completion. The project could form the lifeline of Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas having population of more than one lakh. The areas face acute shortage of drinking water during peak summer days. The fitting and laying of 6 inch dia pipe line started soon after the tender was allotted to a local contractor. But the project could not take off as the NHPC officials forcibly stopped work on the project. "CISF men snatched our identity card issued by the NHPC authorities and directed us not to proceed further", said a local laborer working on the site of construction. The laborers informed that the CISF personnel also directed them not to report at the construction site from now onwards.Meanwhile the officials of the PHE department in Kishtwar confirmed the reports. "The NHPC officials have already been informed that the Water Act does not authorize them to stop water lifting. The officials said that they were in contact with the higher ups and was hopeful that the construction work/laying and fitting of pipes will be start soon. Let them explain under which authority have they (NHPC) stopped work on the project", A PHE official said.
