Drain collapses within weeks of construction | | | Early Times Report
KISHTWAR , Mar 5 : A drain constructed by GREF has collapsed here within weeks of its construction. Locals alleged that the drain collapsed because sub-standard material was used in its construction by the contractor engaged by GREF. Constructed on both side of the national highway, it passes through main market of Kishtwar. Nearly 200 mt of it has collapsed near Shaheedi Mazar. The GREF officials demolished the whole drain within half an hour after local scribes reached the spot. The people alleged that the contractor engaged by GREF had used sub-standard material in the construction of the drain and demanded an independent inquiry into the incident. The people said that due to the sub-standard work, water leaked and overflowed into their houses. As the drain on both sides of the highway always remained blocked, it caused problems for commuters. A pool of dirty water could be seen outside hospital complex and at bus stand. The GREF authorities, who were responsible for the maintenance of the highway, had failed to do so as pit holes were clearly visible in the main market area. The local people also criticised GREF authorities for their failure to complete the construction work on time and maintain the road width. The GREF has also failed to construct the Batote-Kishtwar-Anantnag road on time. |
