Jammu of woes, electricity failures, power curtailments | | | Pankhuri Aggarwal
Jammu, Mar 5: The harsh weather conditions with the frequent power cuts in the city of temples have made life almost impeccable for the people here who are grappling with the problem every day. Though a relief in a way as the government has come up with the installation of electricity meters in the city, with major of the areas already covered under it and the electricity department generating even good revenue on that account, then why the government is playing the game of hide and seek with the public, thereafter is a question that needs to be pondered upon. Why there is no continuous supply of electricity in the household after all such installations is a kind of question mark on the department. "The power requirements increasing day by day, has lead to a mind washing situation in the Jammu region", said the chief engineer of the canal road. Although, the dipping of water level in the rivers and moreover the uncertain climatic conditions has surely erupted problems for the production of the electricity and this has lead to the electricity problems in the state. Due to this, the department is only able to generate 550mw electricity from the Jammu region. The situation is on such a stage that even the northern grid has strictly informed the Jammu and Kashmir power department that if they do not stop this overdraws; the regular power will be stopped. "The transmission lines are so badly tied up with the trees that if even a drop of rain falls down, we have to surf the consequences as then the power cut ranges for more than five to six hours." said Shashi Gupta, a resident of canal road. Climate, it may be fog, winter, summer or rainy is yet another obstacle that has badly affected the frequency of lines which is bound to impact the supply position. And to overcome this problem, the power cuts have increased in the city. While the city areas are facing a continuous cut of over ten hours, the other areas on the outskirts of Jammu face fifteen hours of regular cut. "With the advent of winter season, mostly the demand for electricity increases due to the direct use of electricity from the main line but we are hoping for the best for the up coming summers", added the chief. Stating that the illegal connections are the main reason behind the increased power demand in the state, the consumers say that all this should have been analyzed before. "We have proposed schemes to solve out the problem of electricity crisis in the area. We are now waiting for those schemes to get sanctioned. Once the schemes get sanctioned all the problems will be solved, "said Amit Siani, an electricity department officer. |
