Nothing new: Opposition | | | Jammu: Contending that there was nothing new to offer in the budget presented by Finance Minister AR Rather in the Assembly today, the Opposition parties have termed it as 'old wine in new bottle'. While concern has been expressed on what opposition sees as rising Fiscal Deficit (FD) some Jammu based leaders have also questioned about budget being silent over the plight of West Pakistan and PoK refugees. "The speech of Finance Minister does not fully reflect the sad affairs of state economy but jugglery of figures. J&K is still dependent on the central government for developmental funds and nothing has been said about how to increase the revenue collection", said MLA, Chaman Lal Gupta.Gupta said that the economic survey indicate the ignorance on part of government about serious problem which is looming large on the state because of the crumbling agriculture sector."Revenue dependence upon the central grants and some internal taxes, while non tax revenue is not keeping pace with the growing investment and expenditures", he said.Criticizing the budget,CPI (M) state secretary and MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said that the Budget is reflect or indicate government's efforts or any road map for revitalization of state's economy and also ignoring the basic concern of the people.Tarigami termed the Budget as a half hearted exercise and said that despite claims of increase in SGDP, the fact remains that in view of the rising inflationary trend seen last year, common masses were bearing the brunt and there is no major relief for them."Instead of offering token concessions under VAT and GST, the thrust should have been on agriculture, horticulture the key sectors of our economy which continue to provide livelihood to nearly 80% of our population due to insignificant industrial base", he said."The government has once again shown its insensitiveness towards basic issues before the common man and consequently budget does not carry any mention of food security, universalization of public distribution system, solving unemployment and making social security schemes people oriented", Tarigami said.J&K National Panthers Party (JKNPP) MLA, Harsh Dev Singh too has termed the budget unchanged from what it was the year."There is no relief to employees and pensioners", he said. He said that most of Fiscal Deficit is increasing since past many years and despite warning by the 13th Finance Commission to control it and bring it down to 3 per cent, J&K has failed to do so.Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has termed the budget as directionless and anti-people as there is nothing for the West Pakistan and PoK Refugees who are facing discrimination at the hands of the government."It has ignored lakhs of people who have been denied their basic rights and are still waiting for the release of relief assistance. We oppose the annual budget tabled by Finance Minister", said Ashok Khajuria. |
