Book on 'Conflict in J&K released | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 6: A book entitled Conflict in Jammu & Kashmir: Impact on Polity, Society and Economy was released at Jammu University today. The Book edited by Lt. Gen. V.R. Raghavan (Retd) was released by R.D. Sharma, Dean, Academic Affairs. The Book is the result of a seminar organised jointly by Department of Strategic Studies, Jammu University and Chennai based think tank Centre for Security Analysis (CSA) headed by Gen. Raghavan. Gen. Raghavan explained the background to the study in that he highlighted that CSA was carrying out detailed study on internal conflicts in India, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka and their internal and external consequences. He also highlighted that internal conflicts tend to protract for decades and result in consequences which have serious implications on governance, society, economy and polity. Often the consequences tend to provide sustenance to the conflict and sometimes become the causes for the new form of conflict. Therefore, a holistic look at the conflict should include not only the causes but in greater detail the consequences. It is relevant to remember that while the causes remain history, consequences are a reality which the society and the nation have to face. In the case of Jammu & Kashmir, over the years the original causes have invariably become less salient as the insurgency evolved. Its consequences have become causes for continuing the conflict. The long term consequences have been felt in all spheres of life - economy, governance, politics, inter provincial relations and the very fragile social fabric of the state. The relationship between the people in the Kashmir valley with that of Jammu and Ladakh has been affected. This in fact, is a major consequence of the conflict in J&K and has become a new driving force of the conflict. The conflict brings up new generations who are embittered and whose perspectives are coloured as they grow up in this environment. Since the outbreak of the insurgency, intra-group cohesion and solidarity has dramatically increased within the state. They tend to organize along ethnic lines to articulate and seek redress of their grievances. Overlapping layers of group/ethnic/linguistic identity have become salient features of the conflict in J&K. A panel consisting of former Director General of Police, Ashok Bhan, editor of Rising Kashmir, Sujat Bukhari and Rekha Chowdhary discussed issues covered in the Book. A number of intellectuals, academics, serving/retired bureaucrats and military officials and prominent personalities from Jammu attended the function. |
