Beig contests tall claims in budget: contradictory, misleading | Vouches for representation to backward areas in govt | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 6: A day after Finance Minister AR Rather presented budget in the J&K Assembly, opposition PDP termed the figures and claims made by the government as misleading and contradictory to the 'gloomy and grim' picture in the Economic Survey Report. PDP also attacked government for its failure to come up with a 'roadmap' for grey areas where it contended the government had faltered miserably to suggest some corrective and remedial measures. Former Deputy Chief Minister and senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig who initiated the debate in the House using his oratory abilities interspersed with pun and satire in fact made two pronged attack on both economic as well as political front, contesting the claims of NC led coalition government. Beig said whatever has been described as achievements by the government were only 'jugglery of figures' as these are not only incoherent and contradictory but also misleading. Continuing his arguments for over one and a half hour, the PDP leader who is also expert on economic matters contested the claim of the government on growth rate in the state , contending that even though government can derive satisfaction of it being at par with national level, the concern remains as it had failed to take remedial and corrective measures to address the key areas like power, agriculture and industry which define and shape the economy of any state. "If government remains in this complacency J&K would end up in a disastrous position …………it would be left with no amount to spend on the development activities even if it is able to get a huge plan size….", Beig maintained, adding that major sectors that determine the strength of economy are registering downward trend. " How is it possible for any state to show a rosy picture of economy is good health…..", the PDP leader questioned adding that the grey areas have remained unaddressed which needed government attention on war footing. He said even as government has been able to register good recoveries on taxes front, which is appreciative but at the same time the scenario specifically on the power front is dismal and eating up major share of funds that could be diverted towards development. He underlined the need for reformative measures and a proper roadmap in order to take out this sector out of mess and debt trap. Former Deputy Chief Minister also targeted the Finance Minister on fiscal deficit front saying even though government claims it to be narrowing it was still a matter of worry and concern. Howver, Muzaffar Hussain Beig's political bouncer on the coalition was on the development front where he not only contested the government claims but also tried to prick with political punches that it had failed to address poverty and backwardness in hilly areas of Jammu despite having representatives from both the allies. On a suggestive note PDP leader observed that in the backdrop of differences over report by Finance Commission, it was better to have a committee with some persons as members from outside the state who can give recommendations acceptable to all the three regions. He also raised pitch for representation in cabinet of representatives from backward areas and backward communities like Gijjars and Bakerwals. In his typical satirical style to hit out government Beig said it was good to praise and seek peoples cooperation for maintaining peace in the state and share its dividends. "But everyone one knows who disturbs peace and restores it……", he observed asserting in the same breath it has been the agenda of PDP all through and its patron Mufti mohammad Sayeed's loud call that it is only Peace that can ensure progress of the J&K state. Questioning the intentions of government on the Joint Venture (JV) signed between Jammu and Kashmir and Central Government on the construction of hydro-power projects, Beig said that it is against the interests of state as its major share will be taken by centre. |
