EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 7: Hitherto no attempt has been made to exploit the state's resources for cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants and herbs and efforts are afoot to popularize medicinal plants, particularly those used in Unani, Ayurvedic/ Hemo-pathy. The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introdu-ction Centre is one of the premier Agriculture, Hortic-ulture & Floriculture based institution involved in production, development, introduction, trading and manufacturing of Fruit, Medicinal Plants, Vegetable seeds of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introdu-ction Centre, has recently embarked upon a vigorous programme of cultivation about 50 species in its nurseries at its centres at Pulwama, Ramban, Kargil and Gulmarg. Some of the important species being cultivated in this programme include : Oak-Quercus robur Colchicum Luteum, Saffron Bulbs (Crocus sativus Linn), Marijuana-Cannabis cashmiriana, Hawthorn ber-ries/seeds(Crataegus oxycantha), Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Celosia Linn, Pyrethrum, Malus communis, Prunus armeniaca, Pru-nus serotina, Cedrus deodar, Aeaxulus indica Colebr, Capsicum annum, Ginkgo biloba Seeds,Wild Cherry, Sweet Cherry, Pomengr-anate etc. Official sources said that in case the state agencies and private enterpreneurs took interest in the cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs Jammu and Kashmir could be one of the top states in India that export medicinal plants. A survey carried out years ago has revealed that the hilly areas and vast forest belts in Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Anantnag,
Shopian, Kulgam, Kup-wara abound in plants and herbs that have medicinal values. Once the cultivation of these herbs was carried out on a large scale Jammu and Kashmir could be a major exporter of medicinal and aromatic plants and herbs.
Experts in the medicinal plants centre have suggested to the Government to provide cash incentives to those cultivators who embark on cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants and herbs. They have also suggested to the Government to eplor e the possibility of setting up a unit for manufacturing perfumes.
