Poor poll show, Cong may compelled to mercy NC in state | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 7: With dismal performance of the Congress in recently concluded Assembly elections in five states, the position of party has become weak at Centre giving an edge to National Conference (NC) the senior coalition partner of the party in J&K over the party . The defeat of Congress in UP, Punjab and Goa has been to the advantage of NC as Politically weak Congress at Centre will be in the interests of the NC which can rule roost in the state and dictate terms to the party that recently has raised eye brows over the style of functioning of the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and had snubbed him after seeking resignation from Peerzada Mohammed Syed from State Cabinet in the impersonation case of his foster son. Sources said that with the dismal performance of the party in UP and Punjab the Congress is in a state of shock and it will now not afford to take cudgels with NC and force it to absorb more ministers from the party in the council of ministers. The Party can't even press for plum ministerial berths in the proposed cabinet reshuffle next month, sources added. Sources said with Congress drubbing at the hustings in just concluded Assembly elections the Party has to remain at the mercy of NC and it can't pull out from coalition also keeping in view the general elections of 2014. The Party can't either force the NC to allow the tainted ministers of the party to continue in office as NC has already made it clear to the party High Command that continuance of tainted ministers in council of ministers have brought a bad name to coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah, sources added. To give a solace to the Party though , Omar Abdullah in his reaction to outcome of elections has targeted BJP saying the party has nothing to merry as its performance too has not been good in the Assembly poll but in the heart of hearts NC too feels elated as weak congress will be more advantageous to it. However according to political analysts continuing in alliance for weak Congress will prove disadvantageous for the Party as it can't dictate terms to its alliance partner as it used to do prior to outcome of poll results. The staying of weak Congress in coalition where it can't keep its views with force and enforce its decisions can also create major problem for the party in ensuing civic body elections and assembly poll in 2014. Sources said NC will keep its cards open now as Party is confident that the more weak the Congress more will it benefit the party and it will be free to implement its agenda in the state. The Congress both ways will be disadvantageous. By pulling out of coalition or remaining in it the party has to pay the price and NC knows it better so it will not leave any opportunity to take the full political advantage of the situation, sources added. |
