BGSBU does environment a `million dollar favour' | Rs 5 Cr embezzled | | Early Times Report RAJOURI, Mar 7: Investigations have brought embezzlement worth Rs 5 Crore to the fore in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri. The investigations carried by the state government in grant of central funds given to NGOs in the state has revealed that BGSBU was the biggest beneficiary having received more than Rs 5 Cr in the past five years in the name of bio diversity centre being run by the university. Though the university runs a centre for environmental activities but no apparent work has been done by the centre in the said field. According to informed sources, the University has not only received funds from the central ministry of forests and environment alone. Sources said it has been funded by the ministry of Human Resource, Textile and science and technology. The amount given by other ministries is in addition to the 5 Cr given for environmental activities, the sources said. The embezzlement came to light after state government came to know that a number of NGOs operating in the state of Jammu and Kashmir were receiving hefty sums from the central government which mostly goes unchecked and un-monitored. On this revelation, the state government investigated and found that whole of the amount has been swindled by the officials of BGSBU particularly by the officials running the Bio Diversity Centre. Official sources said that the investigating agency may conclude its findings against one Dr Asfaaq Ahmed Zari who has been directly operating the affairs of Bio Diversity Centre and is reported to have amassed a fortune after being recruited as AR in BGSBU. Repeated efforts to contact Dr Zari and other University officials bore no fruit. |
