Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Mar 7: Tension again gripped the town here today after some miscreants stoned the traditional Bhairav procession at City Chowk. To prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn, police resorted to lathicharge and fired teargas shells.
Several processionists were wounded in the police action and miscreants' attack. As mark of protest, some organisations representing minority community gave a call for Rajouri bandh on Thursday.
Meanwhile, as a standard measure against any act of sabotage, the administration later imposed section 144 in and around the town. The Bhairav procession was stoned in the town for the second consecutive day today. After the procession was attacked, police swung into action by resorting to lathicharge and firing teargas shells to chase away the miscreants and save the situation from worsening further.
When many of the processionists sustained injuries in the miscreants' attack and police action, the minority community members held a strong anti-police protest and burnt the effigy of SSP, Rajouri.
They demanded the immediate transfer of SSP, Rajouri, DIG of Rajouri-Poonch range, SHO of Rajouri police station and DSP (hqrs) for their alleged failure to provide security to the peaceful Bhairav procession.
They later gave police the names of some of the miscreants and demanded their immediate arrest.
Rajeev Rohtra, Sat Pal Sharma, Yugveer Gupta and Dinesh Sharma, all members of Baba Bhairav Dev Committee, Rajouri, urged the chief minister to intervene and ensure legal action against the accused.
Sanatan Dharam Sabha president Dinesh Sharma and BJP's Kuldeep Raj Gupta, Vivodh Gupta, Yogesh Sharma and Rajinder Sharma condemned the incident, urging the people to maintain peace and communal brotherhood.
To show their resentment against the attacks on Bhairav procession, Baba Bhairav Dev Committee, Sanatan Dharam Sabha and some other Hindu organisations have given a call for Rajouri bandh tomorrow.
To avoid any untoward incident on the occasion, police had already made elaborate security arrangements.
The administration was also trying to talk to the elders of both the communities to restore peace in the town.
