Defeat of the Gandhis is comprehensive | UP Elections | | Rustam JAMMU, Mar 7: That the Sonia Congress was destined to suffer a comprehensive and humiliating defeat in Uttar Pradesh (UP), Punjab, Goa, and even Uttrakhand was a foregone conclusion and it actually happened. I will focus only on UP and not other states. UP rejected outright the Congress despite the fact that at least three Union Ministers, including Law Minister, and a large number of Congress leaders, including political guru of Rahul Gandhi, Digvijay Singh, communalised the whole election scene. Despite the fact that the Congress violated to the hilt the Model Code of Conduct to woo the Muslim voters; despite the fact that the Congress election strategists made common cause with those involved in terrorist activities; despite the fact that the Congress Yuvraj and prime ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi addressed more than 225 election rallies and organised more than 15 road shows; despite the fact that Rahul Gandhi campaigned in UP for almost two years; despite the fact that his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra camped and aggressively campaigned in Rae Bareli, Amethi and the adjoining Sultanpur for almost 30 days to ensure the victory of the Congress candidates; despite the fact that Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also campaigned in UP; despite the fact that the Union Government and the top Congress leadership did all that they could to capture UP; and despite the fact that the Congress contested the assembly elections in the state in alliance with Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) of Ajit Singh who is known for changing sides in no time. The Congress could capture only 27 seats out of 403, as against 22 it had won in 2007. The defeat of the Sonia Congress in the crucial UP should not surprise anyone because this so-called national party has been suffering defeat after defeat after 2010. It suffered a massive defeat in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, to mention only a few states, in 2011. And, it suffered a humiliating defeat in the just-held civic elections in Maharashtra. The point I am trying to make is that the people have come to know about what the Sonia Congress stands for and what are the implications of the policies the Congress-dominated UPA Government has been pursuing as far as the national security, territorial integrity of India and Indian polity, society and economy are concerned and that's the reason they are holding aloof from this party. That the Sonia Congress has lost its appeal could be seen from the political judgment delivered yesterday by the people of Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur and Pratapgarh, the Gandhi family's pocket-boroughs. Rae Bareli and Amethi are represented in the Lok Sabha by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, respectively. The Congress did not just lose 17 of the 20 segments in the four parliamentary seats of Amethi, Rae Bareli, Sultanpur and Pratapgarh, which it holds, but it did not even come second in 13 of these Assembly segments. In Amethi, the Congress could win only two seats out of five. It finished third in the remaining three segments. In the 2007 Assembly elections, the Congress had fared quite well. It had won eight of the seats in the Amethi and Rae Bareli parliamentary constituencies. The humiliation was most perceptible in Sonia Gandhi's Rae Bareli, where the Congress lost all five seats. It finished third in all the segments, barring Harchandpur. In the Harchandpur, the Congress candidate came second. The Congress candidates even lost to candidates of lesser known political groups like the Rashtriya Swabhimaan Party (RSP) and the Peace Party (PP) in the Bachhrawan and Rae Bareli assembly segments, respectively. All this shows that neither the Gandhi name nor the fact that Rahul Gandhi's sister, Priyanka Vadra, who camped in the area and campaigned vigorously for days, helped improve the electoral prospects of the Congress candidates. This is the position. There is no doubt whatever that the Gandhis or the Vadras are no vote-catchers. They have no appeal. The Sonia Congress is a sinking ship. There should be no doubt about it. Believe it or not but it is a fact that the people across the country have appreciated the defeat of the Gandhis and Vadras. Why? The answer is not far to seek. |
