Awareness campaign on forests begins | | | Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Mar 9: A two day awareness campaign on the theme "forests for sustainable livelihood" began here today. The programme was inaugurated by Upender Pachnanda, Chief Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, Jammu. Sponsored by WWF-Nature India( J&K) under National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) 2012 & organised by 'Nav Chetna'- a WWF Nature Club of Govt. Degree College, Udhampur the programme consists of film show, painting and Poster making Competition, Plantation and Awareness Rally, Inter-college painting and poster making competition. As an awareness component of the campaign, Upender Pachnanda delivered a lecture on the theme. In his address he said that emphasis should be given not only to trees and plantation but also on the restoration of ecosystems and habitat diversity such as grassland, pastures, wetlands and other critical ecosystems. Prof (Dr) Nutan Kumar Resutra, Principal of the college in his speech said that the chief value of the forests is their permanence and their capacity to renew themselves. An inter-college painting and poster making competition was held simultaneously on the theme "Forests for sustainable livelihoods" in which students of Shivalik College of Education, Bharatiya College of Education and the host College participated. Sarabjeet and Renu Atri from Shivalik College stood first whereas Priya Sharma of Bharatiya College stood third in Painting Competition. Students of Bharitya College stood First and second in Poster Making whereas the third Prize was shared by the three students of Shivalik College and the host college. Dr Udey Bhanoo, Prof Romesh Kumar Atri and Prof Satish Kumar comprised the Jury. Earlier the programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp followed by welcome address by Prof G R Verma, Advisor, Nature Club. |
