International Women's Day celebrated | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 9: As per the past precedence this year also the International Women's Day was celebrated by the Jammu and Kashmir State Women's Development Corporation in the auditorium of the Govt. College for women Gandhi Nagar Jammu on 8th March, 2012 wherein an impressive cultural programme was organized. Besides college students, SHG members, women from all walks of life also witnessed the function. Almost all the members from various self help groups from all the areas of J & K State participated in this function. The function began with traditional lighting of lamp by the chief guest Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo, Guest of Honour Khem Lata Wakhloo Chairperson J&K State Social Welfare Board and Madam Bimla Luthra, Madam Indu Pawar and Nazir Ahmed Gurezi all MLAs. Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo chief guest while speaking on the occasion emphasised upon women in general and self help groups in particular to come forward and work unitedly for their rights and socio-economic empowerment. The minister also said that the Government had initiated various schemes for making women economically self reliant and giving them their due place in the society. She further said that women have achieved success in different walks of life and it is the responsibility of every woman to play a significant role for their empowerment. She stressed the need for education of the girl child, the only tool for women empowerment. She also marked this day, as the day of reaffirmation for improving socio-economic condition of women and changing the mindset of the society in general and women in particular. Khem Lata Wakhloo chairperson J&K State Social Welfare Board in her address emphasised that women is an important part of our society and needs to be given her due for overall development of the society and state as well. Bimla Luthra MLA while appreciating the efforts of the WDC stressed that women folk should come forward for demanding their legitimate rights. Nazir Gurezi and Indu Pawar MLAs while speaking on the occasion appreciated the progress made by the women in every sphere of life and focussed upon every important role of women in our social setup. They further added that women empowerment would ultimately lead to more political representation and in turn social justice, once two wheels of human cycle move together. The gathering was also addressed by Seema Khajuria senior advocate and Madhu Khullar Director Health Services, Jammu deliberated upon medico-legal issues pertaining to the women cause. On this occasion minister also distributed cheques to the tune of Rs.24.75 lakh among 36 women beneficiaries and also inaugurated the two days sale-cum-exhibition of products prepared by SHGs assisted by Women's Development Corporation. She inspected the stalls and appreciated the members of SHGs for producing variety of the products for earning their livelihood independently. Earlier in her welcome address Naheed Soz, Managing Director, J&K State Women's Development Corporation highlighted various activities and achievements of women's Development Corporation and laid great emphasis on the newly tapped market of Prasad Jute Bags of SMVD which has immensely contributed towards the empowerment of the women. While talking of women empowerment she said that success of few successful women can not be attributed to each woman in J&K for this we need to work hard for women empowerment. Lastly vote of thanks was presented by R.K. Katoch, Secretary, JKWDC. |
