| Health insurance scheme of state Govt employees in doldrums | | |
Jammu, Jan 21 Pending settlement of dispute between state government employees and a private insurance company over final amount of premium of their medi claim policy, fate of large number of state government employees continue to hang in balance. Official sources and leaders of state government employees union said that in view of the cut throat competition in the Insurance sector it is worthwhile that state government should go for retendering instead of wasting time on negotiations. According to a state government employee the health insurance scheme has run into rough weather as the private insurance company suffered heavy loses owing to a spate of claims from the employees. At present claims to the tune of Rs 10 crore are still pending with the insurance company aggressively pushing for hike in premium rates and making it mandatory of the 3.50 lakh state government employee to register under the scheme. The insurance company authorities have already conveyed to the state government that the scheme would be continued provided all the 3.50 lakh employees were brought under its ambit and the annual premium amount was raised. However, the employees unions threatened that they would pull out of the scheme if the premium amount was further raised from the existing rate ranging between Rs.1000 and Rs.1400 per employee. The state Government used to contribute 50 per cent of the premium. Out of 3.50 lakh employees only 48,000 have been covered under the scheme. Official reports said that the insurance company had yet to settle the claim of a section of employees to the tune of Rs.10 crores. These claims were pending as the company was trying to assess the veracity of these claims. The negotiations are still on and indications are that the Government may invite fresh tenders from insurance companies. So far the Government has not fully succeeded in making the employees agree on increasing the premium amount. If any other company bids on a lesser premium amount than demanded by the company that has been given the tender last year the agreement with the old company will be scrapped. The Government has favoured that besides bringing all employees under the scheme the premium amount be raised to Rs.2400 out of which the Government would contribute 50 per cent.
