Rajouri tense; no relaxation in curfew on Day | | | early times report Jammu/Rajouri, Mar 9: As tension showed no signs of receding in Rajouri after the Tuesday attack by miscreants on a peaceful Bhairav procession at City Chowk in the town, the district administration preferred not to give any relaxation in the curfew restrictions. After Tuesday, the Bhairav procession was stoned on Wednesday too by the miscreants who were agitated by the alleged hate speech of VHP leader Togadia. While Rajouri police had registered a case against Togadia under section 153 A, the tempers were not cooled down. Following the stoning of the religious procession on Wednesday, clashes had broken out between the two communities, forcing police to fire teargas shells and resort to lathicharge to disperse the protesters. Alleging that police had taken action against them for no fault of theirs, the processionists had held anti-police protests and burnt the effigy of SSP, Rajouri, demanding his immediate transfer. Fearing that the situation could worsen further in the communally-sensitive town, the district administration had placed it under curfew. Army was also asked to remain in a state of readiness to help police in maintaining law and order in case the need arose. As minor clashes today occured at some places between the members of two communities and attempts were made to violate curfew restrictions, the administration decided not to give any relaxation. Heavy deployment of police had been made at all the vantge points in the town and its peripheral areas to avoid any untoward incident. Police had rounded up some persons of both the communities and booked them under relevant sections of law. An appeal was also made by elderly persons of the two communities to maintain peace and communal brotherhood. Meanwhile, divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal and IGP Dilbag Singh also visited the town today to take stock of the situation. They held discussions with the civil and police authorities there and later returned. Repeated efforts to contact them, however, failed as they did not reply the phone calls made to them. Official sources said majority community members held anti-Togadia protests in peripheral areas of Rajouri, demanding his arrest for giving hate speech in the town on March 5 last. They had also formed a 22-member committee to present the community's view on the issue. Reports reaching here said ex-NC MLA Mohammad Aslam Khan took out an anti-Togadia procession at Manjakote and demanded strict action against those on whose invitation the VHP leader had come to Rajouri. Protests were also held in Kotranmka, Thanamandi, Aiti and Saaj areas. At Aiti, the protesters tried to violate curfew restrictions but they were chased away by police. In Rajouri, however, people were allowed to offer Friday prayers in the central Jamia masjid. The night vigil in the town too had been stepped up by police.
