Violence against Women on rise

Violence against woman is a social crime and many voluntary organizations are working around the world to eradicate this menace.
It is an act of aggression, usually in interpersonal relationship or relations. It may be aggression of individual women against her, suicide, negligence of ailments, sex determination test, and denial of food and so on.
Violence scars the lives of millions of girls in all countries of world because of lack of protective laws, girls (women) are particularly vulnerable to family violence, sexual violence, rape, sexual exploitation, harassment at work and in case of armed conflict rape kidnapping or forced service as soldiers.
It also includes physical battering, emotional neglect, torture, sexual abuse, deprivation of legitimate share in proper dowry deaths, female foeticide, prostitution, misrepresentation, violence against widows violence includes subtle and explicit form of violence to which girls are currently subjected.
According to Gelles, it is an act of striking a person with the intent of causing harm or injury but not actually causing it.
According to Stauss, a violent act is an act where there is a high potential of causing injury and according to Kampe, violence means physically striking an individual and causing injury.
The operational definition of violence may be given as force whether overt or covert used to wrest from an individual (Women) Something that she does not want to give of her own free will of which causes her either physical injury or emotional strains or both, thus rape, wife burning, sexual-abuse, eve-teasing are examples of violence against women.
According to Govind Kelkar (1991), violence against women in the economical and political context of power relations, ‘Violence is an act of an illegal criminal use of force’.
According to records compiled by ministry of home affairs, police research bureau and the National Institute of Social Defense, every year about 11,000 rapes, 21,000 molestations, 12,000 kidnappings, 20,000 cases of torture, 1000 case of eve-teasing and 5000 cases of dowry death in India. Jammu and Kashmir is ranked 7th in the crime rate against women.
