| Hurriyat leaders, PoK govt for peace process | | Militancy no solution in changed scenario: Umar | | BL KAK NEW DELHI, JAN 21 By far the most significant development in Islamabad this weekend: Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) government and the Jammu and Kashmir Hurriyat Conference delegation have gone against anti-people programme and policies of Muslim militants and terrorists. And to facilitate the ongoing peace process between India and Pakistan, the Hurriyat delegation and the PoK government decided to set up two working groups, one each on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC). The decision was taken in Pakistan's capital city at a high-level meting. Maulvi Umar Farooq led the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) delegation and the PoK President, Raja Zulqarnain, and Prime Minister, Atiq Ahmed, represented the PoK government. The working groups aim to help Pakistan and India resolve the Kashmir issue. APHC representatives and PoK political leaders will be part of the groups. According to reports furnished to India's Foreign Office, Maulvi Uamar Farooq told mediapersons after the meeting that the APHC and Pakistan occupied Kashmir were trying to hold an "intra-Kashmiri dialogue" and India and Pakistan should allow a visit of PoK leaders to Indian-administered Kashmir. According to the Maulvi, the next few months will be important because Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, would visit Pakistan, followed by Gen. Pervez Musharraf's visit to India. In an obvious reference to hardliners on either side of the LoC, the APHC chief, Maulvi Umar Farooq said that opponents of the current peace process had "damaged the Kashmir cause". The Maulvi was blunt in his expression as he made a pointed reference to 'mujahideen' and urged them to support the ongoing peace process. And the Maulvi pronounced: "Militancy is no solution to the problem in the changed scenario". The APHC chief also made a passing reference to his principal political opponent, Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The Maulvi voiced the demand: All Kashmiris, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, should be allowed to visit both parts of Kashmir. A tripartite dialogue, involving Kashmiris besides India and Pakistan," is needed to make the peace process a success", Maulvi Farooq told mediapersons. Replying to a question, the Maulvi said:"It seems that tripartite dialogue will come in the last phase of this peace process". The PoK Preswident Zulqarnain was quoted as saying: "President Musharraf's four-point proposal for a Kashmir settlement was also discussed at the meeting". PoK opposition parties were invited to the meeting but did not turn up. |
