Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 10: Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) MLA and leader of Panthers Legislature Party Harsh Dev Singh today demanded the launch of Metro service in Jammu in view of it having fulfilled the eligibility criteria laid down by Govt. of India.
Speaking during zero hour in the Assembly, Harsh Dev Singh said that the GOI had announced during January this year to provide Metro Services in those cities which had a population of more than 15 lakh. He said that the Jammu District had a population of 1526406 as per 2011 census and hence qualified for Metro Service. He said that the Jammu city had expanded so as to cover the entire district with its limits having been extended upto Vijaypur, Nagrota, R.S Pura and Akhnoor and embraced the said towns within its jurisdiction.
Singh said that the state govt. should immediately take up the issue with GOI so that early steps were taken for initiation of the Project. He said that vehicular traffic in the city had become unmanageable and caused insurmountable problems for the general public. He said every year 40,000 new vehicles were added to the existing fleet in Jammu district which further compounded the traffic problems of city. He said govt's repeated announcements and claims of early flyovers in Jammu had proved to be a farce.
He said if the traffic issue was not taken seriously it could assume alarming proportions and create gigantic hardships and severe problems for the general masses.
Harsh Dev Singh said that Srinagar had already been provided mono rail service which plied between Qaziqund and Baramulla. He said the said facility was provided despite the fact that population of Srinagar District was only 1269751 as per 2011 census.
Singh said that launch of Rail Service in Kashmir to provide alternate commuter services in the valley and to ease the pressure on local transport was welcome, but the case of Jammu could not be given a differential treatment especially in a situation when the city of temples had qualified the norms fixed by GOI for Metro Services.
