CM determined to make him a hero | Geelani's house arrest | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 10: The Chief Minister, it seems, has not learnt a lesson from his mistakes. A few days after Osama bin Laden's killing, Omar said detaining Geelani was a mistake. "I will not make him a hero again", he said. Geelani was allowed to proceed to Batmaloo where he led a poorly attended funeral prayer (in absentia) for slain Osama. "Geelani was allowed to reach Batmaloo Friday to lead funeral of Osama with a purpose. Had we stopped him, he would say that thousands of people would have assembled to participate in the prayers." Inspite of being a strong bastion of Geelani, the funeral prayers attracted a few hundred persons. In 2010, the government was scared of Hurriyat's Chalo programmes. Whenever the separatist conglomerate urged the people to reach a particular place, the government always responded by clamping curfew. When Early Times wrote on August 1, 2010 that the government should not ban Hurriyat's chalo programmes, nobody heeded the suggestion. Ten months down the line, the Chief Minister vindicated Early Times stand. "Detaining Geelani was a mistake. I made him a hero." Today when Geelani arrived from New Delhi, the police took him to his Hyderpora residence where he was placed under house arrest. Omar forgot his lesson. He is again making him a hero. What would happen if Geelani is left alone? He would go to a village to attend the funeral of a slain militant. Or, he may visit a mosque in Sopore on Friday to deliver a sermon. People may chant anti-India and pro-Azadi slogans. It has been happening in Kashmir for the past sixty years in general and the last two decades in particular. Even toddlers and school going children chant these slogans. Has it made any difference till date? The local media would cover the event. National and International media would ignore it as usual. Or to put it plainly, Geelani's freedom would not yield the desired results. On the contrary placing him under house arrest attracts international attention. This exactly what the separatists want. |
