| HC notice to J&K govt over DNA profiling of unmarked graves | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 11: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has issued notice to the state government on a petition seeking DNA profiling of those buried in unmarked graves in the Valley. Admitting the petition, a single-judge bench of Justice Hasnain Masoodi on Friday issued notice to the state, seeking its response within two weeks.
The High Court directed the petitioner Zahoor Ahmad Mir to place on record the report of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on the issue. Mir, son of a person who disappeared a decade ago, had sought conducting of DNA profiling of all those buried in over 2,000 unmarked graves in north Kashmir's Bandipora, Baramulla and Kupwara districts to get it matched with that of their relatives.
Seeking intervention of court over the issue, relatives of the disappeared persons apprehended that their loved ones might have been buried in the unmarked graves. The investigation wing of the SHRC had last year admitted existence of over 2,000 unmarked graves in the three districts of north Kashmir and had recommended DNA profiling of the deceased for establishing their identity. The SHRC had adopted the report and forwarded it to the state government for action, which included paying compensation to relatives of the missing persons and bringing to book the persons responsible for the innocent killings, wherever proved. |
