Kashmir-like situation developing in Rajouri... | Act before it is too late | | NEHA JAMMU, Mar 11: Situation in the already communally-sensitive Rajouri city is highly volatile. Anything can happen anytime. Certain elements in the majority community, according to reports, are out to create in the area "Kashmir-like situation so that the members of the minority community flee from the city" like the members of the minority community quit their homes and hearths in Kashmir in early 1990 to escape their physical liquidation and religion and culture and protect their dignity. The nation just cannot afford genocide of the minority community or religious cleansing from the highly strategic border belt. For, results would be disastrous if any such thing happens. Reports suggest that the administration has just not been able to bring the situation under control and that the miscreants, anti-social elements and certain undesirable forces are openly defying the rule of law, even curfew, to frighten the already rather frightened minority community. Things have deteriorated in the area to the extent that the minority community is not being allowed to practice their religion in the manner they had been practicing till the other day. So much so that their properties are targeted, some of which are, according to the aggrieved minority community, attached to some religious places. All these unfortunate, rather dangerous, incidents are taking place at a time when the popularly-elected government is in place and assembly session is on. The speaker of the legislative assembly did a right thing by suggesting that a group of ministers and an all-party-delegation should immediately visit the trouble-spot so that peace and normality is restored and both the communities appreciate each other's sensitivities. It was for the state government to take some immediate steps to protect the minority and send a signal across the state that it would not tolerate any attempt on the part of any community to break the law and undermine the authority of the state. But, unfortunately, there is nothing on the ground which could even remotely suggest that the state government has done what was needed to be done to restore the faith of the minority community in the state apparatus. Yes, there are a few reports that the local administration has been meeting leaders of the two communities to sort out the matter, but this is just not enough. It would have been better had the chief minister, who holds the home portfolio, along with other ministers and representatives of the various political parties, including PDP, BJP and JKNPP, visited the trouble-spot on the day things took an ugly turn. Such action on his part was imperative. That he and his government didn't do so constitute a sad reflection on the nature of the state. The situation as it prevails today in Rajouri warrants an immediate central intervention. Any delay on the part of the Union Government, especially the union home ministry, would only help the undesirable elements achieve their ulterior objectives. The union government must act before it is too late. And, why the way where is the Congress MP who represents Poonch-Jammu parliamentary constituency in Lok Sabha and the Congress MLA who represents Rajouri assembly constituency in the legislative assembly? What are they doing?
