Ignoring Mangat, Cong makes political suicide
3/12/2012 12:16:54 AM
early times report
Jammu, Mar 11: The Cong high command by giving MLC ticket former minister Jugal Kishore Sharma at the expense of Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma has not only added to its worries but has caused resentment in its cadre which could be detrimental to the interests of the party.
The name of Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma was almost certain purely on merit. The veteran Congress leader had won all elections except 2008 because of the anti-Cong wave inJammu district on account of Amarnath land agitation.
His coming into the MLC could have paved his way into the the Cabinet or to the post of deputy chief minister with the aim of restoring political prospect for the party.
But by reversing its decision, the party had done great dis-service to itself.
Jugal Kishore, considered a close to GN Azad, was also aide of the Ghulchain Singh Charak, who was party in-charge of the party in Punjab where the party lost election despite having an edge over the SAD_BJP.
There was feeling in the party, because of the reversal in the Punjab, his induction as MLC could send a wrong signal.
The resentment is also account of the fact that Reasi was not only given district status but also granted College during his tenure as MLA from that constituency but despite that he lost election, which party leaders feel was not a healthy sign of contact among the masses.
The party feels that if there was another suitable candidate other than Mangat, it was Bhupinder Singh Pathania, who didn't't join prestigious Pillani Engineering College, but chose to serve the State but joining Cong.
Pathania had inducted GN Azad has district youth president of the party.
Senior party leaders feel, Pathania should have been given mandate for his service.
"There is resentment across the party leadership even in those belonging to Azad camp as Mangat Ram Sharma should have been given mandate. The party has shot in its foot and will pay dearely in coming elections," said a senior Congress leader.
