PCI stands for Karnataka journalists | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 12 : The Press Council of India chairman, Justice Markandey Katju has yet again expressed support to the media persons. This time he has stood for the rights of Karnataka journalists who are facing `persecution' for telecasting MLA watching porn in the Legislative Assembly. In a detailed letter he has appealed for dropping proceedings against the journalists. He has recommended action against the MLA who violated sanctity of the house by watching porn. The letter reads: "In my respectful opinion such proceedings against the media persons jeopardize the freedom of the media guaranteed as a fundamental right by Article 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution of India, and seek to create an impression that it is the media which has brought the House into disrepute rather than the MLAs involved. I am informed that an inquiry committee has been set up by the House to enquire into the matter. In my respectful opinion the inquiry committee can certainly ask the media persons concerned questions to ascertain the correct facts about this sordid affair. But from what I could gather, the questions being asked give the impression that the media persons are being treated as an accused of some offence, and are being grilled accordingly." Pertinent to mention some MLAs of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly were filmed watching porn in the Assembly Hall. Instead of commending the media persons for their professionalism, proceedings have been started against them. The chairman citing constitutional provisions said that neither the legislature nor the executive can violate the constitutional provisions, particularly the fundamental rights like Article 19 (1) (a)."The people, as per the constitution are the masters and the legislators their representatives. It, therefore, is the duty of the journalists to inform the people of the activities of the legislators. Hence I do not see what wrong the media has done by telecasting the watching of porn by the M.L.A.s in the House. To my mind the media were only doing their duty to the people of informing them of the shameful manner in which some of their representatives were behaving", he said. Recommending telecasting of all the proceedings of the legislature, Katju appealed for stern action against the erring MLAs who have brought disgrace to the House. |
