Rural Women Cultural, Sports Meet Held At Nagrota
First Lady stresses on education of girl child

JAMMU, Mar 12 : The Viraj Kala Kendra, a Jammu based local NGO, organized a Rural Women Cultural and Sports Meet at Youth Hostel, Khanpur, Nagrota near here today. The Meet was sponsored by the Youth Services and Sports Department.
Usha Vohra, First Lady, was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the First Lady lauded the continuing efforts of the Viraj Kala Kendra for the socio-economic upliftment of the rural women, educational advancement of the children of slum areas and the promotion of rural arts.
Referring to the various sports activities and the cultural programme presented on the occasion, Vohra said that there is enormous talent among the women and children of the rural areas, which needs to be adequately channelised.
She appreciated the participants of the cultural and sports events for their confidence and talent and for presenting a captivating programme. She stressed the importance of the right to education of all children, particularly the education of the girl child as this is the key to progress and empowerment.
On behalf of the Governor, the First Lady presented a cheque of Rs. 50,000 to the management of the Viraj Kala Kendra as a token of help in providing education to the children from the less advantaged families.
Vohra gave away prizes to those who presented the cultural programme and the participants adjudged best in the races organized as part of this event.
Earlier, the First Lady laid the foundation stone of an additional room at the Viraj Bal Bhavan, Khanpur, Nagrota, a school run by the Viraj Kala Kendra, for the education of children from the slum areas.
Vohra also went around the exhibition of the various crafts organized on the occasion and evinced keen interest. These products have been prepared by the women associated with the Viraj Kala Kendra.
Raj Bharti, President, Viraj Kala Kendra, in her welcome address, presented a detailed report on the activities and functioning of the Kendra. She thanked the Governor and the First Lady for taking keen interest in the activities of Viraj Kala Kendra and supporting its initiatives.
Susham Sharma, General Secretary of the Viraj Kala Kendra, presented a Vote of Thanks.
Dr. (Mrs.) Madhu Khullar, Director Health Services, Jammu; Dr. (Mrs.) Indu Koul Khoda, Chairperson, Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association, Members of the Viraj Kala Kendra, prominent women, senior officers, a large number of women of the area and the children of the Viraj Bal Bhavan were present on the occasion.
