But when will BJP translate its words into action? | Hollow Sloganeering | | Neha JAMMU, Mar 12: The state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday again demanded resignation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and threatened a mass agitation in Jammu in the event of the National Conference (NC)-Congress coalition government not dispensing justice to the people of this province. The BJP demanded resignation of Omar Abdullah on the ground that he has been consistently challenging the state's accession to India by ignoring the historical fact that the then Maharaja Hari Singh had signed the same Instrument of Accession with the Union of India. Another reason which made the state BJP to demand resignation of Omar Abdullah was that he has "failed to provide good governance" and that he is making controversial statements only to "divert the attention of masses from his failures." Asserting that "Kashmir-centric and pro-Pakistan forces in the state will not succeed in their evil designs", the state BJP leadership threatened that it will "launch a massive campaign to expose NC, Congress and PDP for their relentless efforts to destabilize the state". Besides, the BJP leaders accused the state government of creating an environment in Jammu province that has forced "more than 25000 educated unemployed youth to migrate to other states in search of employment". The BJP leaders, including the party president, made these statements, coupled with a warning, while addressing a gathering at Trikuta Nagar, Jammu. The function was organised by the youth wing of the party. No one would disagree with what the state BJP leadership said. For, what it said was absolutely correct. The Chief Minister has on occasions more than one challenged the very accession of the state to India and he has done so both in and outside the state legislature, with the Congress-dominated UPA not asking the Chief Minister to behave. Similarly, the NC and the Congress combine has left no stone unturned in its desperate bid to reopen the otherwise settled issue of Jammu and Kashmir. Both these parties are responsible for the nation's woes in the state. The frustrated and left-in-lurch educated unemployed Jammu youth have also in their thousands migrated to other parts of the country in search of jobs is also a hard fact. It would not be out of place to mention here that the state government of which the Congress is an important part has systematically excluded the Jammu youth from the vital service sector and that's the reason the rate of unemployment in Jammu province is as high as over 69 per cent. The BJP leadership also did not cross line when it dismissed the NC-Congress coalition government as inefficient. That there exists no government worth its name in the state and that a handful of politicians and bureaucrats are manipulating the system for promoting their own interests are the two other hard facts no one can really contest. These are the real issue which do cause worry and need immediate resolutions taking into consideration the paramount national interests and interests of the marginalized sections of society, including the youth, as well as the general political and economic rights and interests of the people of the state. But the question is: what has the state BJP done to create a situation that forces the state government to mitigate the hardships of the people and discard those policies considered harmful for the unity and integrity of India? The BJP has not done anything whatever except issuing some hollow threats. It has become customary with the state BJP leadership to talk tough while addressing party workers but when it comes to the crunch the same BJP leadership does nothing, thus becoming an object of ridicule and contempt. It is because of its lack of commitment to what it publicly says that the people have lost faith in the BJP leadership. The BJP needs to translate its words into an action if it really wishes to win over the estranged people and take on and defeat its political rivals such as the Congress. It would do well to remember that the people are fed up with its hollow sloganeering. They want concrete action on the ground. They also want a credible alternative to the present NC-led dispensation because it has only disappointed them. |
