8 hr curfew relaxation in Rajouri passes off peacefully
3/13/2012 12:06:46 AM
Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Mar 12: As Rajouri town fast returns to normalcy after the last week's clashes between two communities, the administration today relaxed curfew for eight hours here.
The relaxation period passed off peacefully as no untoward incident was reported from any part of the town.
The curfew was first relaxed from 9 am to 12 noon. When this period passed off peacefully, the relaxation was extended up to 2 pm and then up to 5 pm.
After 5 pm, the curfew restrictions were again imposed strictly. Police personnel, who patrolled the roads and streets in the town, were seen asking people to return homes.
The minority community members did not open their shops in protest against the attack on Bhairav procession in the town last week. They demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants who had stoned the procession.
The administration was, however, continuing talks with the representatives of two communities to restore peace in the town.
Meanwhile, Sanatan Dharam Sabha (SDS), Rajouri, accused the district administration of its alleged biased role in dealing with the miscreants of who had attacked the Baba Bhairav procession.
Kamal Bakshi, a senior SDS member, said the situation worsened in Rajouri because the administration failed to deal with it in an efficient manner. Had the miscreants been held soon after they stoned the peaceful Bhairav procession, the situation could have been averted, he added.
Other SDS members -- Rajinder Gupta and Kaidar Gupta -- said the clashes exposed the district administration's inefficiency to deal with such situations.
Instead of taking action against the stone-pelters, police had lathicharged peaceful processionists and fired teargas shells on them, they regretted.
Later, a SDS delegation, led by Dinesh Sharma, called on the district administration and assured full cooperation in its efforts to restore peace in the town but demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants who had attacked the Bhairav procession.
Prominent among those who were part of the delegation included Pushpinder Gupta, Kewel Koul, Sushil Shrama, Lalit Mahajan, Kamal Singh, Rajiv Gupta, Kuldeep Raj Gupta and Bitu Shah.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Vibodh Gupta appealed to the majority community elders to
hand over the miscreants who had pelted stones on the religious procession.
