Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 12: On the initiative of the Prof Saif-uDin Soz, J&K PCC President and MP, in capacity of the Chairman, the Coordination Committee finally met after a long gap here today but only ended up with no major decision nor any consensus over the issues that were taken up for the discussion. Coordination Committee is the highest Forum of coalition allies National Conference and Congress for settling the issues and matters that crop up between the partners to arrive at unanimity .
Convened under the Chairmanship of Prof Soz this evening, it could not arrive at any consensus over appointments at the highest level in the State Vigilance Commission, an issue which is pending for a long time, mainly due to absence of NC high command in the meeting. Sources said even though the meeting was called without any pre decided agenda, the thrust of the discussion remained around constituting Vigilance Commission from the Congress . Sources said Congress advocated that there has been delay in setting up of the Commission which needed to be finalized with respect to selecting appropriate name for heading the Commission.
However, National Conference is said to have showed no enthusiasm nor any eagerness towards the issue. Sources said NC though represented by senior members remained non committal also because no member from the party high command , neither Dr Farooq Abdullah nor Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were present in the meeting. Those who attended the meeting conveyed to Congress that it was under the consideration of the party high command and soon some decision would be taken in this direction.
From the Congress, apart from Prof Soz the meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and former Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma whereas NC was represented by Finance Minister A.R. Rather, Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Ali Mohammad Sagar, and Member Legislative Assembly Ch. Mohammad Ramzan in the meeting.
Official handout even though claimed that the discussion on various subjects was held in cordial atmosphere and that there was unanimity of views on the subjects that came up for discussion, highly placed sources maintained that NC showed lukewarm response to most of the major issues on which Congress wanted some final settlement. According to official handout, the subjects like institution of Vigilance Commission, strengthening of Consumer Protection Mechanism, filling up of vacancies in Human Rights Commission, Backward Classes Commission and Public Service Commission came up for focused attention. But it was mainly the Vigilance Commission on which both the partners exchanged views. It said Committee will take some more time to identify suitable persons to take up responsibilities in various institutions.
However, it was due to non committal attitude of NC Prof Soz declared the committee would meet after 10-15 days.
