JAMMU, Mar 13: Teaching faculty of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGBSU) Rajouri is again at logger heads with vice-chancellor Prof. Irshad Hamal over the later's denial to accept their long pending demands.
Interestingly, administration did not allow the news of strike to become public by disallowing media inside the campus. They added that faculty members working in the university are annoyed over the manner in which their genuine agreed demands are being ignored and they are being made to suffer.
Irked over whimsical attitude of university administration, sources said that prevailing circumstances forced more than dozen faculty members to leave their jobs and join other professions. Despite several reminders and requests, sources said that university administration preferred not to resolve the pending issues and remained mute spectators to the deteriorating situation in the university.
Due to strike, sources said that classes wore gave deserted look as all the faculty members boycotted lectures and practical work. Association leaders said that since the formation of BGSBUTA, they have written to the administration for recognition of their body several times but to no avail. A leader of the association said that the university administration has only procrastinated issues but never bothered to respond to any of the communication from the last nine months.
He added that Vice-Chancellor of University Prof. Irshad Ahmad Hamal did hold a meeting with the staff but refused to budge from his stated stance. Sources said that Hamal tried to browbeat and pressurize the teaching faculty. They added that president of the association Dr. Asgar Ali Shah had heated arguments with Hamal over the latter's refusal to accept the demands of the teaching faculty, which includes granting recognition to Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah Teachers Association (BGSBTA).
Resorting to delay tactics, sources said that VC referred to executive council and said that a decision would be taken there only. However, President of teachers association reacted to this and said that being chairman of the executive council, he had powers to grant recognition to the association. But adamant Hamal refused to accept the demands. The meeting ended without any breakthrough.
Immediately after this, teachers called general body meeting and it was decided that till recognition is not granted in writing, strike will continue. Even the curfew in Rajouri town had no impact on the strike of the teachers association. Later, it was announced that under the umbrella of BGSBU Teachers Association, faculty members would continue boycott of classes for indefinite period till their demands already served to the administration are not mitigated.
It needs to be mentioned here that BGSBU administration had assured the teaching faculty a month ago that their main demand of recognition of teaching association will be fulfilled but when the administration failed to address their demands, they announced boycott of classes from Monday for indefinite period. The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting of BGSBUTA which was held under the chairmanship of Dr Asgar Ali Shah, President of the Association.
He added that administration is acting shortsightedly by resorting to dilatory tactics. "Teaching fraternity feels suffocated and so far many teachers have left the university even for jobs like JE, plus two and college lecturers' in the state. Many departments in University are facing shortage of faculty but administration does not bother to fulfill the needs," he added saying that this is directly affecting quality of education because of the over burdening of the left over faculty.
Teachers feel that administration does not want to create congenial academic atmosphere in the university, added a faculty member. Despite curfew, sources said that teachers pledged to continue their struggle. They also said that they have already approached Chancellor of the University, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and apprised him of deteriorating situation in the university.
