Congress, PDP,NC oppose PP demand | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 14: Politics makes strange bedfellows. The oldadage was proved right today when foes joined hands to oppose Panthers' Party demandfor abolition of Legislative Council. The Congress, Peoples Democratic party(PDP) and the National Conference spoke in one voice and severely opposed thedemand. The Panthers Party leader, Harsh Dev Singhbelieves that the Upper House had become a White Elephant as the stategovernment had to spend Rs 200 Crore annually to keep the House running. "Thesum spent on the salaries, perks and conducting the business of the House couldprovide employment to 40,000 people", he said. Harsh has sought cooperation from NC, PDP andthe Congress for amending the constitution to facilitate abolition of theCouncil. According to informed sources, all the major parties believe thatparty that demands Council's abolition was not in a position to get a singlemember elected to the Upper House. "This is the main reason behind the demand",they said Pertinent to mention 21 seats of the Councilare filled by the members of the Legislative Assembly. The party that has thehighest number of MLAs gets the lions share in the council. The smaller partieshave no chance of sending even a single member to the Upper House. Surprisingly all the major parties have putforth a common argument to oppose the move. The NC, Congress and the PDP saythat the Council has given a chance to veteran politicians to serve the state. "Hadthere been no Legislative Council, we would have been deprived of theirservices", said a senior PDP leader. Similar statements have come from NC andCongress. "Political leaders and activists, who had been defeated in the Assembly elections, have been electedto the Upper House", they said.
