Coalition pocketing funds meant for civic amenities intowns: Mehbooba

Jammu, Mar 14: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehooba Mufti today said thatState Government has failed to provide basic civic amenities to people becausefunds being sanctioned by the Centre from time to time for providing civicamenities have been brazenly pocketed by the leaders of the ruling coalition.
Addressing a public meeting at Purani Mandi area of Jammu city organised bySuhit Sharma, PDP president said that Centre has been pumping whopping amountto improve civic amenities in the towns but the funds are not properly utilizedin the State.
She said that it is all due to the prevailing corruption inthe state that these funds are siphoned off by the leaders of the rulingcoalition.
Expressing her concern over failure of the coalition regimeto implement Central sponsored schemes in the state, she said that that allsuch schemes are defunct due to mis-governance.
She observed that funds allocated for these developmentalschemes are either misappropriated or brazenly siphoned off by the members ofruling coalition. "Due to lack of transparency and accountability in thegovernance, there is no check on the utilization of funds allotted by theCentre for developmental schemes", she pointed out and added that all the majorCentral sponsored schemes are defunct due to lack of direction, monitoring andaccountability.
She especially mentioned that schemes like JNNURM which arespecially formulated for the development of urban areas, is not properly implemented in this state because government is not serious to implement suchschemes.
Speaking on the occasion spokesperson PDP Naim Aktharlambasted the coalition regime for delaying civic bodies elections with one oranother pretext. He said that the Centre has blocked grants worth crores forurban development because the state government has failed to constitute dulyelected local bodies.
"Elections of thecivic bodies including Jammu and Srinagar municipal corporations were due inthe month of February 2010 but the government has been delaying elections withone or other excuse by denying people their democratic rights", he said.
Senior PDP leader Ved Mahajan accredited the PDP led regime sayingthat it was first time after 1947, all regions were treated equally indevelopmental and other activities.
