Early Times Report
rajouri, Mar 14: While police today took into custody 17 activists of Sanathan Dharam Sabha (SDS) and BJP, including an ex-municipal president, for violating section 144 imposed, minority community observed a complete bandh in the town and held protests at several places.
Curfew restrictions were, however, relaxed in the town from 8 am to 8 pm. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the district during this time.
When SDS members and BJP leaders tried to take out a procession in the morning in violation of section 144 imposed in the town for the past one week, police took at least 17 of them into custody.
They included ex-municipal president of Rajouri, Rajinder Gupta, Yogesh Sharma , Vijay Gupta, Hardev Raj, Bharat Bhushan Vaid, Kamal Gupta, Dev Raj Gupta, Ashok Gupta , Davinder Malhotra , Sushil Vaid, Ram Avtar, Youginder Gupta, Karan Vir , Rajesh Data, Rakesh Gupta and Kulbhushan, besides senior BJP leader Kuldip Raj Gupta.
They refused to leave the police station till a legal action was taken against the miscreants who had stoned the peaceful Bhairav procession on March 6 and 7.
After the procession was attacked, clashes had broken out between the two communities following which the administration had imposed curfew in the town.
Since then, the minority community has been demanding the arrest of those who had pelted stones on the peaceful Bhairav procession.
Meanwhile, the business establishments of minority community in Rajouri town remained closed on the SDS call given in protest against the attack on Bhairav procession.
At Sunderbani, people sat in the middle of the Jammu-Rajouri road and blocked it to vehicular traffic, demanding immediate arrest of those who had stoned the Bhairav procession. The blockade was lifted after some time.
Protests were also held by the minority community members in Nowshera, Kalakote and Siot areas.
Official sources said the curfew was relaxed in the town from 8 am to 8 pm. Though the relaxation period passed off peacefully, the administration was keeping a close watch on the situation.
BJP leader Vibodh Gupta said their protest was not against any particular community but it was against the failure of police in arresting the real culprits . " We demand the immediate arrest of those who have let loose a reign of terror in the town. We appeal to the leaders of majority community to come forward and isolate the trouble makers in the society. It is the duty of majority community to assure the safety and security of the minorities", he added.
