Reshi smells foul in Haji Yusuf death probe

Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 14: Though the HS Bedi Commission probing the death of Haji Yusuf, national Conference activist under mysterious circumstances, was given second extension till ending March and it was yet to finalize its report, prime witness in the case Abdul Salam Reshi Wednesday said that if the Commission fails to unveil the truth, he will go to Supreme Court and will fight till last drop of his blood.
While talking to Early Times Salam Reshi said that he has deposed in writing before the commission on February 22, 2011 after commission issued summons in the case to witnesses including him.
Refuting the reports that he has changed his statement, Reshi said, " The question does not arise, I have rather put some hard facts about the case before the commission which were not disclosed earlier".
Casting doubts on the entire process, Reshi said that rumours about him changing the statement is in itself speaks volumes about the process. "I have kept record of each and everything- even remotely related to the case- and if at all efforts to destroy the evidences by fudging my statement were made, I will come out with the records whenever and wherever required."
"Yes I have some reservations and it is because if a mimic Aijaz Ahmad Bhat records a statement before a court of Law that he was involved in mimicry and has done it a number of times for cash, why he was not arrested by invoking the appropriate provisions of the law" Reshi said in reply to a question. " When Director General of Police also stated in an sworn affidavit in the Supreme Court that Aijaz Ahmad Bhat alias Aijaz Actor became the voice of Abdullah whenever Haji spoke over the phone to someone he wanted to dupe, why he was not arrested" Reshi questioned.
Reshi who hails from Kokernag constituency in South Kashmir and fought 2008 general assembly elections unsuccessfully as independent candidate and latter joined National Conference, however said that mimicry to dupe cannot impress him because he was having substantial evidence to prove his point" When asked has he brought this thing to the notice of Bedi commission, Reshi said, " I disclosed many things and yet there many interesting things to reveal and I will do that at appropriate time. Interestingly Reshi has named Political Advisor Chief Minister, Devinder Singh Raina in his deposition for the first time as there was no mention of Raina in Reshi's earlier statement recorded before the crime Branch.
"I assure the people of this state through your news paper that I will never conceal the facts nor I will concoct them, whatever I know about the case I will put before the people at the appropriate time" Reshi said. It merits a mention here that the Bedi Commission probing the 2011 death of National Conference (NC) worker Haji Yusuf recently allowed a plea by his relatives to visit Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's house.
Lawyer Mushtaq Ahmad Dar told reporters that the Justice (retired) H.S. Bedi commission "today allowed our application seeking permission to visit the official residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the headquarters of the state crime branch and the police hospital in Srinagar"."We shall be visiting the residence of the chief minister on March 13, the crime branch headquarters on March 14 and the police hospital on March 19," he said. The state government on November 18 had appointed the retired Justice H S Bedi as the head of the one-man commission to probe the death of 61-year-old Yousuf in crime branch custody after the State High Court turned down its request for sparing a sitting judge for conducting the probe.
Yousuf was handed over to IG crime branch by the Chief Minister on September 29 last year after he allegedly admitted to taking money from two National Conference workers for getting them favours from the government. The Commission was asked to complete its probe within six weeks but due to 'unavoidable circumstances' including pendency of a petition relating to the matter before Supreme Court and adverse weather condition, the state government granted a three-month extension on January 7.
