Beware of Pak mischief on border | | | On one hand Pakistan seems to be keen in promoting ties with India through the process of dialogue aimed at reducing trust deficit on the other hand Islamabad and its agencies, including the Army and the ISI continue to sustain conflict and aid to militants. This is one of the reasons for India to take measured steps while engaging Pakistan in the process of dialogue. That Pakistan has remained engaged in upgrading war machinery and its defence prepardness is evident from a report of the Ministry of Defence which has revealed that since 2004,even after the border ceasefire, Pakistani troops have carried out construction of 886 bunkers,261 morchas398 towers and 143 Border outposts on the LOC and the IB.This report is enough to make one believe that Pakistan has learnt these tricks of keeping the border conflict with India alive fom China.Again like China, which has raised the defence budgt by 11.2 per cent,Pakistan too has hiked the defence budget by 11 per cent so that its able to spend nearly Rs.495 billions on upgrading war machinery and on the upkeep of its troops.By raising the defence budget by 11.2 per cent China will be spending about Rs.110 billion dollars on modernisation of war machinery and on maintenance of world's largest Armed forces.Though reports from Beijing indicate that increase in the defence budget is the result of China's keenness to be ready for meeting any challenge from Washington, actually the aim is to fulfill its extra territorial ambition by grabbing some stretches of Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh. As far as Pakistan is concerned there is no legitimacy behind Islamabad's pronounced statement that it treats India as a major threat to its sovereignty and integrity. The aim behind Pakistan's more spending on defence than on education and health is that Islamabad, like China,is also trying to either force New Delhi to resolve the Kashmir issue or attempt at grabbing parts of Jammu and Kashmir territory. Otherwise what is the need for Islamabad to spend more on defence and enter into a military pact with China, after handing over to it vast stretches of land in Gilgit,Baltistan and some nort hern areas, when Pakistan has no justification for ringing alarm bells conveying to the world that it has to face a major threat from India. And history bears testimony to the fact that Pakistan has never been invaded by India. If the two sides fought four wars including the Kargil conflict it was the result of Pakistan firing the first salvo. This is what has happened in 1947, 1965,1971 and 1999. Worse than all these wars, which proved to be a shortlived affair, has been the prolonged and still to end the era of insurgency first in Punjab and later in Jammu and Kashmir. This Pakistan sponsor ed insurgency has resulted in death and destruction on a massive scale in Jammu and Kashmir.Though the security scenario, during the last two years, has registered a marked improvement Islamabad and its agencies, including the Army and the ISI,continue to needle India in Jammu and Kashmir.More than 2,000 militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, have been brought on the launch pads across Jammu and Kashmir borders for the purpose of being pushed into the northern state of India for sustaining violence.Had they got an opportunity to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir the state would have witnessed a new phase of violence. However, the Indian troops have,af ter executing better border management programme, succeeded in foiling about 85 per cent of infiltration bids during the last two years. It is comparatively calm in Jammu and Kashmir but one is apprehnsive about this calm being a lull before a storm. It is in this context that the security forces have been directed to intensify their search operations for forcing the small groups of militants to be on the run. After losing their man and weapon power militants have started playing hide and seek game with the security forces and that is the reason for their activities in remote areas of the state.Beware of Pak machinations is what India needs. |
