Decisions of Congress high command being questioned | Retaining Control Over Jammu | | Neha
JAMMU, Mar 15: Congressmen in different parts of the country have started challenging the authority and questioning the decisions of the Congress high command (read AICC president Sonia Gandhi and her son and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi). It happened on March 12 in Jammu and Udhampur. In Jammu and Udhampur, supporters of Congress leaders Mangat Ram Sharma and Bhupinder Singh Pathania protested against the decision of the high command to give mandate to former minister Jugal Kishore Sharma for the lone vacant seat in the Legislative Council. They also raised slogans against the JKPCC leadership and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. That Jugal Kishore would return to the Legislative Council unopposed was a foregone conclusion. Though Mangat Ram Sharma and Pathania didn't resign from the party, they are likely to avenge their exclusion at an appropriate time. They are not going to take things lying down. It was not important that the high command gave mandate to A or B, but was significant was the negative response the decision evoked from sections of Congress workers, something very rare. The authority of the Congress high command was not only challenged in Jammu and Udhampur but it was also challenged in Uttrakhand and on the same day. In Uttrakhand, as many as 17 newly-elected Congress MLAs under the leadership of Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Harish Rawat, plus one Member Parliament, rose in revolt against the Congress high command. Not only this, Rawat himself put in his papers. The reason was the decision of the Congress high command to appoint Vijay Bahuguna as the state chief minister. Bahuguna took oath of office on Tuesday. Only 8 Congress MLAs attended the oath taking ceremony. About 18 Congress MLAs camped in New Delhi and expressed solidarity with and supported the candidature of Harish Rawat. Not only this, the supporters of Rawat raised anti-Sonia, anti-Rahul and anti-Ghulam Nabi Azad slogans. Rawat till date has neither withdrawn his resignation letter nor attended the Parliament. Reports suggest that 17 Congress MLAs have formed a group against Bahuguna making it loud and clear that they would not accept any leader other than Rawat. It needs to be noted that the Congress has only 32 MLAs in the 70-member House. What happened in Uttrakhand and New Delhi was unprecedented. It was an open revolt. The situation in Uttrakhand is so uncertain that anything can happen anytime. The fact of the matter is that disgruntled elements in the Congress have started defying the high command and this doesn't augur well for the so-called grand old party of India, which has already suffered erosion in its support-base across the country on an unprecedented scale. As far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, the Congress's position is already very weak. Its support-base has dwindled to a considerable extent. The reason is that the people are fed up with its indifferent and negative attitude towards them and their problems and needs. The other reason is that the Congress is sharing power with a party which is known for its bias against them. The fact is that the state Congress is not just unpopular but also faction-ridden and that the number of disgruntled elements in the party is increasing day by day. |
