Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Mar 15: The Rajouri town, which had almost become normal with the lifting of day curfew by the administration Wednesday, was today again placed under curfew following a clash between police and minority community people, who were demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants who had last week attacked Bhairav procession twice in the town.
Though the day curfew was yesterday lifted in the town, section 144 was imposed. When some minority community members, including women, today tried to take out a procession near tehsil office in violation of section 144, police stopped them from moving ahead.
This resulted in heated exchanges between the two sides. The situation, however, took an ugly turn when the two sides clashed with each other.
While the protesters stoned the cops, the latter resorted to lathicharge. At least six cops and several people were hurt, according to official sources.
Some women were also hurt in the police action. Cops were later alleged to have entered some houses and beaten the inmates, including children.
As the situation became tense, the administration reclamped curfew in the town. Soon after the announcement in this regard was made, a large number of police personnel patrolled the roads and streets in the town, asking people to stay indoors.
The minority community has demanded immediate attachment of DC and SSP, Rajouri, for their alleged failure to arrest those who had attacked the peaceful Bhairav procession for two consecutive days last week.
Alleging that police had failed to control the situation, they demanded the deployment of army in the town.
Divisional commissioner and IGP, Jammu, also visited the town today and held parleys with senior civil and police officers to restore peace in the town.
An anti-police protest was later held by people at Jawahar Nagar. The protesters raised slogans against DC and SSP, Rajouri.
The curfew restrictions caused probems to the students who had come here to take their exams. Official vehicles were later arranged by the administration to drop them homes.
