Artisan from Valley brings laurels, sole invitee at Berlin fest | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 16: Farooq Ahmad Mir, a renowned artisan from Kashmir who has already won national award for his expertise and contribution in the rarest of Kashmiri art Kani Shawl, has once again made the state proud by winning accolades for his work and intricate art form at an international trade festival held at Germany from March 7 to 11. Mir, 57 year old artsian was the sole invitee in this Trade Mart named ITB Berlin from entire country.. Hailing from a family whose ancestors have been experts in making of Kani Shawls , Mir has inherited this precious art from the clan and is taking forward this art form with innovations and additions as per the likes of the people in various countries. His entire family is involved in making of Kani shawls at their ancestral residence Narwara in Srinagar . Mir's elder son is also a recipient of state award in the art form. At the Berlin Festival which had hundreds of artisans from across the globe and thousands of visitors and art lovers, Mir gave a demonstration of making of the Kani shawl, on a a loom, which was highly appreciated. His work and art details on different pieces have been acknowleged and lauded not only by the Tourism Ministry of India but also the host country Germany besides Tourism ministry from Turkey. Upbeat about the participation with success and applaud from all quarters, Mir says while it has made him happy, but at the same time there is need to popularize this art form from Kashmir by giving exposure to more and more artisans from the state in such fairs and festivals organized at the international level. "I appreciate having been provided this opportunity to represent Kashmiri shawl art and represent India at such a prestigious festival and forum. …..this is a sufi hertitage about which very few people know yet like it very much when they see it", Mir said while talking about the shawl craft which he represented in the festival. Pertinent to mention is that the Trade fair at Berlin saw a number of trade visitors, exhibitors from across the world . |
