Traffic streamlining facing road blocks | | | Pankhuri Aggarwal
Jammu, Mar 16: Efforts to streamline traffic in Jammu notwithstanding, there is no let up in the number of road mishaps and the traffic situation is also far from satisfactory. To tackle the rising number of road mishaps and chaotic traffic, the state police had launched a website of the traffic police and also opened an account on Facebook. However, a lot remains to be done at the administrative level in this regard so that the understaffed department could deal with the problem. In addition to that the government has planned to install hi-tech electronic lights in Jammu on the Built Operate Own Transfer (BOOT) basis to regulate the smooth flow of traffic in the city. The idea behind launching the website and Facebook account was to get suggestions from people on the traffic scenario, but hardly any step has been taken on the suggestions thus received. Sub-traffic police inspector, S.D.Gupta said, "Around 123 crossing points had been identified for the installation of signals, out of which only 55 points will be installed with signals in Jammu city in the next coming year. To implement the proposal at the ground level at the earliest to provide hassle-free traffic facilities to the people and check traffic congestion and jams in Jammu city, the minister constituted a four-member committee under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, with the Transport Commissioner, IGP, Traffic, and the Special Secretary, Home, as its other members. The committee would negotiate with the parties, who had offered their services to launch the project. The spokesman added, "The committee would submit its recommendations for further action". For the past one year, the authorities have been saying that the proposal is before the state government. However, even as the Chief Minister has already given his nod for installing traffic lights, the work has not been started yet. In a recently held meeting to review the traffic regulation system, Mubarak Gul, adviser to the Chief Minister, also stressed on this matter. He said, "Traffic lights should be installed within a short period so that the precious time of office and school goers and other commuters could be saved from long traffic jams". He added, "All departments concerned should be modernized for the regulation of traffic." "He also stressed upon the need for enforcing halting of public transport vehicles at identified stops and checking of parking on the roadsides". The meeting decided that the Housing and Urban Development Department would be the nodal agency for the purpose while the Traffic Department would provide maintenance and up-keep facilities. He underscored the need for the timely installation of traffic signals so that traffic on city roads was streamlined to a large extent. The minister urged the agencies concerned to check overloading and rash driving to curb mishaps. |
