Govt stands exposed with financial blockade of Early Times | | | Jammu , March 16 Ever heard the name’Lazwal’, ‘Shakh Dhun’, ‘Pabandi’ and ‘Town Voice’. It not, then these are daily/ weekly and fortnightly published from the State from where 500 newspapers are printed. All except Early Times have been given advertisement. The state government has to pay Rs 2.5 crores to these papers for the advertisements of the government department published in papers. This is the state of affairs of the government which claim to be transparent , takes credit in e-tendering and is even going for independent third-party inspection of the major development works undertaken by the government. If the so called third- party inspection is carried out with information department in doling out advertisement, the government would stand exposed and its bluff would be out in the open. But, the state government has deliberately kept this department out of the purview of the third-party inspection. The department is in control of none other than Chief Minister himself, who waste no time and opportunity in publicizing the efforts of his government in bringing transparency and accountability. There is a pattern with regard to vindictive policy of the government with respect to this paper. During a discussion in the ongoing Assembly election, senior most PDP leader and former finance minster mentioned about the report published in Early times, highlighting irregularities committed in the rural development department. Ali Mohammad Sagar, responding to the allegations of Beigh, said “Yeh Early Times kai hai, mujhe maat bato.” This pharse is not only an insult to the journalism but is also contemptuous attitude of the government with regard to this paper. The government view this paper from the narrow, parochial prism of politics and has dubbed it as anti-establishment and pro-opposition paper. The fact ignored by the government is that news paper around the world in functioning democracy has been anti-establishment with the sole objective of acting as watch dog.
It’s in tune with this tradition that papers have been able to expose not only scandals but also forced the government to corrective action. But no where, more so in India, the government has been vindictive because of the morality and ethics of governance. By deliberately blacklisting Early Times from government advertisement it has not only thrown morality and ethics to the wind but has inadvertently faulted in calling a third-party inspection of government advertisement to set its records straight.
