JKAP cops forcibly enter houses in curfew-hit Rajouri; beat up women, children, elders | | | Early Times Report RAJOURI/JAMMU, Mar 16: While people stayed indoors in the curfew-hit Rajouri town last night, JKAP cops forcibly entered their houses and beat them up. Their victims included women, children and elders. The infamous JKAP has been a cause of trouble in Jammu region on two occasions since 2010. In July 2010, when it was deployed in Samba town following violent protests by people over cattle smuggling, its cops had broken the locks of a number of shops at night and destroyed the goods. No action was taken against them even as the shopkeepers had lodged theft cases against them. 18 months after this unpleasant incident, which had come under severe criticism of the civil society members, JKAP cops last night entered several houses in the curfew bound Nabban Mohalla and other old city areas in Rajouri by breaking the doors open and beat up whoever came their way. Even women and children were not spared. They also damaged glass panes, televisions, refrigerators and other household articles, besides abusing women and girls. They were also alleged to have stoned the houses of several people, including leaders of BJP and Sanatan Dharam Sabha. Main entrance gate to the house of BJP district president Yogesh Sharma was damaged by the cops. Yogesh alleged that the cops misbehaved with his wife and damaged household articles, including crockery in the kitchen. He said he was not in the house at the time of the JKAP "attack". The house of Sanatam Dharam Sabha president Dinesh Sharma was also attacked and ransacked allegedly by the cops. As the news of police highhandedness and attacks on the houses of minority community spread in the district this morning, it sparked off strong protests. Raising anti-JKAP slogans, people blocked the road at Sunderbani to vehicular traffic and demanded the arrest of the erring cops followed by their dismissal. They also criticised the government for its alleged failure to restore peace to the town and arrest the accused who had last week attacked the peaceful Bhairav procession. A massive anti-JKAP protest was also held by the people in other Rajouri areas including Siot, Kalakote and Nowshera. In the morning, divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal and IGP Dilbagh Singh took a round of the localities which were targetted by the cops last night. Talking to local reporters later, Kotwal admitted that people had been harassed and beaten in the area. They were living in a state of fear, he added, assuring a thorough probe into the police action. He said human rights violations would not be allowed at any cost in the town. The people, who met him, urged him to remove JKAP from the curfew bound areas and replace it either with army, or CRPF. They also demanded registration of cases against the erring cops. Kotwal and Dilbag, who were in the town since yesterday, also held talks with the people of both the communities to restore peace to the border district. Meanwhile, no relaxation was today given in curfew, which was reclamped here at about 1.30 pm yesterday following a clash between police and minority community members. Before this clash, the day curfew had been lifted in the town. |
