Believing unscrupulous Pakistan would be suicidal | Gen Singh's Advice | | RUSTAM JAMMU, Mar 17: Army Chief General V K Singh yesterday asked the troops to remain vigilant as "Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is yet to see an end to terrorism". "The troops should not become complacent as we are yet to see the end of terrorism in J&K," he said in a security meeting at Nagrota-based 16 Corps headquarters. Gen Singh was here for a day and was briefed on the prevailing security situation in South of Pir Panjal Ranges. Lt Gen A S Nandal, General Officer Commanding (GOC), briefed the Army chief on the situation on militancy and infiltration fronts. GOC-in-C Northern Command Lt Gen KT Parnaik also inter-acted with the Army chief. Gen Singh is retiring on May 31 and this visit could be his last and farewell visit to Nagrota-based 16 Corps. In a special "sainik sammelan", held on the occasion, Gen Singh also addressed officers and men of the White Knight Corps and outlined the priority areas of the Indian Army. Gen Singh's was indeed a noble counsel considering the fact that Pakistan has not changed its attitude towards Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has its evil eyes fixed on the state. It wants to annex the state to only finish what it calls the "unfinished agenda of partition" but also establish its control over the Indus waters, especially the Chenab water, because the very unity of Pakistan depends on these invaluable waters. Gen Singh, who has done a great job as Army Chief, asked his troops not to become complacent two days after Defence Minister A K Antony accused Pakistan of using ceasefire to shore up its military infrastructure all along the border, which includes new bunkers, towers and border outposts (BoPs). "The (Indian) government is aware through intelligence inputs that Pakistan has constructed and carried out repairs of bunkers, morchas (open bunkers) and towers," Antony said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, and added that the "new Pakistan border infrastructure that has come up between 2004 and 201 includes 886 bunkers, 261 morchas, 398 towers and 143 BoPs". He also informed the Upper House that "protests have been lodged with Pakistan Rangers and flag meetings of field commanders have been held in all cases" and that the "matter has also been taken up by the BSF with Pakistan Rangers during scheduled meetings at various levels". Besides, he said India has "deployed adequate troops, suitably supplemented by appropriate surveillance and technical intelligence resources to ensure sanctity of the border and counter Pakistan's moves". It bears recalling that it was after decades of "regularly exchanging fire" that India and Pakistan had in November 2003 announced a joint ceasefire along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, the Line of Control and the Actual Gound Position Line in Siachen Glacier-Saltoro Ridge region. The initiative had been taken by the then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. From what Antony told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday it was very clear that Pakistan has used the ceasefire to build up more defence-related infrastructure along the international border and the Line of Control. It is not for nothing that Pakistan has repaired and constructed new bunkers, towers, morchas and BoPs along the border. It has shored up the defence-related infrastructure only to realise its age-old anti-India goal. The sane counsel of Gen Singh to the troops that they must remain vigilant needs to be viewed in this context and the upshot of his whole counsel was that it would be suicidal to believe the unscrupulous Pakistan. |
