Omar opted out from IT conclave for his vote bank | Mukherjee, Akhlesh had similar compulsions | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 18: Opting out of the India Today Conclave has been perceived as Omar Abdullah's political compulsion rather than his busy schedule. Omar, or any other politician for that matter, cannot afford to annoy the vote bank. The Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee and newly elected UP Chief Minister Akhlesh Yadav opted out for similar reasons. Sources close to National Conference said that senior colleagues urged Omar to stay away from the Conclave as controversial author; Salman Rushdie was also expected to deliver a speech. Sources said Omar took the decision to opt out after learning about former Pakistan cricketer, Imarn Khan to boycott the conclave in protest against inviting Rushdie. Omar belongs to a place which is predominantly Muslim dominated. Rubbing shoulders with Rushdie would prove disastrous for him, believe political experts. Young Abdullah has won appreciation from his supporters. However, his decision has evoked criticism from right wing BJP. The Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee had to secure his Muslim vote bank in Jangipur in West Bengal. Support of Muslims to Samajwadi Party in the recently concluded UP elections prevented Chief Minister, Akhlesh Yadav from plunging into `troubled waters'. His book Satanic Verses won Rusahdie death penalty from Iranian spiritual leader, Ayatullah Khomeni. |
