JAMMU, Mar 18: Sadat Hasan Manto's Urdu play 'Neeli Ragein' staged in Natrang Studio Theatre, during Sunday Theatre Series.
The play has been written by one of the most celebrated Urdu story writer, Sadat Hasan Manto and directed by Neeraj Kant.
Highly symbolic and poetic, the play contained many metaphors and symbols which were well received by the audience.
The play opens at the room of a poet, who is entangled in the web of creativity. He lives in a world of fantasies and imagination.
Being a poet, his thoughts are more than the normal thoughts and are metaphysical. He gets an appearance of a Muse like girl in his dream, who is as beautiful as his creativity. He talks to that girl every night and narrates the whole event to his friend.
Whenever he is in his sub conscious state of mind, in his dream he praises the beauty of that girl, which makes her feel better about her, he mentions her smile, mole on the lips and also the blue veins of her white hands, which he relates to the blue sapphire on the white snow. Though this was the praise of her beauty but it makes that girl cold blooded who is always in quest of the warmth of the implied expressions. The slightest of cold is freezing for her, and the recitation of poetry showering praises and glorification fails to meet her expectations. One day she breaks the wordy web of the poet and comes out a w world of realities for the poetic fantasies.
Sometimes words of praise also need to supported by some gestures of reality.
Highly poetic in nature, the language of the play was very impressive which was ameliorated by imagery and metaphors. That was the strength of the play.
Balwinder Singh as 'Poet' exhibited his talent as a genuine actor. He was equally supported by Sajra Qadir as 'Girl' and Rahul Singh as 'Friend'. Mohd. Yaseen designed the sets of the play. Neeraj Kant executed the Lights. The show was coordinated by Sumeet Sharma who also did the presentations.
