Rajouri is not Kashmir, it's like Doda | Communal Harmony | | Neha JAMMU, Mar 18: Certain elements in the strategic Poonch-Rajouri belt have been seeking to create a Kashmir-like situation in this border area since 1990 with a view to forcing the minority community to quit these areas so that thy are able to play their nefarious games calculated to help the Pakistani cause in Indian Jammu and Kashmir, but with no success in real terms. What the extremist elements did in Rajouri during the past 13 days or so was nothing but a manifestation of their frustration in the sense that all of their dubious attempts failed to frighten the minority community. The minority community is very much there resisting the separatists and communalists and holding its own against all odds. It cannot be cowed down or frightened. That the extremists and fanatics would attack the religious procession taken out by the members of the minority community and that they would also attack some houses of members of the minority community with a view to cleansing the area of the minority community in the manner the fanatics and separatists had cleansed the Valley of the minority community in early 1990 was something which many watchers of the area had anticipated. It is a matter of great satisfaction that nothing of this sort has happened, notwithstanding the concerted attempts on the part of votaries of segregation from India, as also notwithstanding the questions being raised against the manner in which the civil administration of the area and political establishment in the state handled the situation. The extremists and separatists failed in this strategic area because they were destined to fail. There are many factors which work against the fanatics. One, the minority community in the area is not a microscopic minority as was the case in Kashmir. It is a minority but a respectable minority. In Kashmir, the non-Muslims constituted a miniscule minority. Two, the members of the minority community in the Rajouri district, like their co-religionists in the erstwhile Doda district, belong to a race which have been successfully facing such situations ever since 1947. Three, the members of the minority community in Rajouri and its adjoining areas and even beyond, like the members of the minority community in the erstwhile Doda district, are committed to defeating all the anti-India attempts and defending themselves and the nation's interest. The proportion of Muslim and Hindu population in the erstwhile Doda district was almost 55:45 and it remains unchanged even after its trifurcation into Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. Four, the relations between the minority community and the majority community consisting of Gujjar and Bakerwal Muslims and Pathowari-speaking or Pahari-speaking Muslims are by and large cordial. Both the communities have been living together and sharing each other's happiness and sorrows since ages in harmony, leave aside the few aberrations here and there. Five, many members of the minority community in the Rajouri area, like their co-religionists in the erstwhile Doda district, are ex-servicemen. They know how to deal with the secessionists and fanatics. Six, the entire Jammu province is at the back and call of those being targeted by the fanatics and secessionists. The kind of shutdown that Jammu province witnessed yesterday is a proof that the people of this region are one against those working for the exodus of the members of the minority community from certain areas in the Poonch-Rajouri-belt. However, to say all this is not to suggest that we can afford to go complacent. We cannot afford even little complacency because anti-social and undesirable elements are there in the Poonch-Rajouri belt in strength who are being used by Kashmiri separatists to create a Kashmir-like situation there. It is for the civil administration, plus the Army, to isolate all such undesirable elements so that they do not dare in future to take law of the land into their hands and disturb the delicate socio-religious and political equilibrium in the area adjoining Pakistan which has its evil eyes fixed on Indian Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, it is also the duty of responsible leadership of both the communities to remain vigilant so that the evil designs of the undesirable and anti-social elements are defeated in no time. One thing is clear: The secessionists and communalists failed in Doda and they will not succeed in Poonch-Rajouri belt either. |
