early times report
Jammu, Mar 18: The fact is the State government has no idea how many Madrassas there in State. Or at least, the confused answ-ers given to questions in the State legislative assembly suggest so. In the past one week the State govt furnished details of total number of registered and unregistered Madrassas on the floor of the house and in the process contradicted its own official records.
In one reply the state government furnished details in the house saying that only 2 madrassas are functioning in Baramulla and in another reply it stated that there are 76 madrassas, leaving the people confused which is the correct information.
In response to an unstarred question of Prof Chaman Lal Gupta the minister incharge education department informed the state assembly on Thursday that there are only two Madrassas in Baramulla. In another similar question asked by CPI M MLA MY Tarigami the State government informed the house that nearly 362 proposals were received through directorate of school education for financial assistance under the scheme and an amount of Rs 347.87 lakhs and 382.59 lakhs stand released to directorates of school education after re-verification of these Madrassas as recurring grants. In the same reply the state government has mentioned details of 76 Madrassas. Furnishing deta-ils in response to a similar question of Porf Chaman Lal Gupta the minister incharge of the state government claimed that there are a total number of 75 registered while 328 are unregistered.
While furnishing details the minister however claimed that no survey has been conducted to identify the registered/unregistered Madarsas in Jammu & Kashmir. If this is the case then how is it possible for the state government to categorize registered and unregistered Madrassas in the state and pinpoint their exact numbers. In the same reply the minister in charge informed the state legislature on Thursday "an amount of 347.85 lakhs, 382.59 lakhs and 28.24 lakhs stand released to Chief Education officers for further disbursement among the beneficiary institutions after proper verification by the district level verification committee to ascertain the existence of these institutions and to verify the other related eligibility conditions".Several senior opposition leaders have raised pertinent questions urging the state govt to come clean on the issue.
