Omar dormant, Tarigami very vocal | Kashmir Solution | | Rustam JAMMU, Mar 19: Votary of revocation of AFSPA, greater autonomy and talks with separatists in Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah doesn't speak much these days on these issues. He also doesn't say much these days about India-Pakistan relations. Nor does he use very harsh language against New Delhi. He has, it appears, gone dormant. I am not suggesting that he is a changed man. I am only suggesting that he doesn't talk much these days about autonomy, AFSPA, Army, Kashmir problem and so on. Why? There is no definite answer to this question. It could be a political compulsion or it could be something different. On the contrary, the "Leftist" and "secularist of secularists" CPI-M MLA from Kulgam MY Tarigami has become very vocal these days. He is crossing line almost everyday; he is violating the Indian Constitution and Jammu and Kashmir Constitution; and he has been airing views which could be legitimately construed as sedition. Just look at what he said at different places between March 9 and 18. On March 9 and 10, Tarigami reportedly said that "a new Constitutional settlement is needed to resolve Kashmir issue and which should be made permanent…The new constitutional settlement should focus on granting substantial self- rule/autonomy and granting constitutional guarantees against its misuse in future". He demanded what he called new constitutional settlement while participating in a conference on "Achieving Peace in Jammu and Kashmir: Options Today", organized by Delhi Policy Group (DPG) in New Delhi. About two dozen legislators from Kashmir and a number of Indian law-makers participated in this conference. What Tarigami said was nothing but a manifestation of his hatred for the Indian Constitution and the State Constitution. None in New Delhi took cognizance of what he said. He went scot-free. On March 11, Tarigami reportedly said that "Kashmir problem essentially pertains to human dignity and fundamental rights of Kashmiris are being ignored…We the people of Kashmir have grievances and the government is insensitive and committed to only its stated positions on related issues". He expressed himself against status quo and spoke about "human dignity and fundamental rights of people of Kashmir" while addressing a convention on "Democratic Rights of Kashmiri Youth", organised in New Delhi by the Centre for Policy Analysis (CPA). None in New Delhi took cognizance of his accusation that the government was so insensitive that it was not prepared to break the status quo. There was no fundamental difference in what he said on March 9 &10 and March 11. And, on March 18, Tarigami reportedly said that "separatists are an important voice and should be engaged in meaningful political initiative and persuaded to be a part of the process…Let the parliament get involved and include all those who are outside the ambit of it in resolution of Kashmir issue". He made these suggestions while talking to the media personnel on the sidelines of a district-level convention of his party workers at Town Hall, Kulgam. He left none in any doubt that he, like the Kashmiri separatists, believe that Kashmir issue is yet to be resolved and that there is but one way in which this issue could be amicably resolved and that is by accommodating what the Kashmiri separatists involved. What is all this going on? Are we a banana republic where anybody is free to say and does whatever he/she wants? What is all this? And, why the way, what are "nationalist" parties like the BJP doing to controvert the pernicious influence of those demanding new constitutional settlement and so on? It is disgusting that the Indian State is in the hands of those who have little or scant regard for the institution of State. |
