Vital surgical items put on sale
SKIMS goes `commercial'
3/19/2012 11:42:33 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 19: In a shocking development, the authorities at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) have put surgical items on sale. Most of the items, now pout on sale were previously provided to the patients free of cost.
According to reliable information, this is for the first time in the history of SKIMS that vital surgical items which the critical patients need after being shifted to ventilator have been put on sale. These items include Breathing circuit, Servo guard, Humidifier and Pressure monitoring kit and many more.
"All these surgical items are needed by a patient who slips into comma and is put on a ventilator," said the sources. They said that the decision of the authorities may prove fatal for many poor patients being shifted to the hospital for treatment. "Since the cost of these surgical items ranges from 325 to 580 rupees and a patient needs at least 2000 rupees for purchasing these items. So the patients whose financial condition is weak cannot afford to purchase them," said a doctor wishing anonymity.
Sources said that there is always a huge budget for the surgical items for the convenience of patients but the authorities seem to be turning the institute into a commercial establishment by putting those items on sale which they are supposed to provide free of cost to the patients.
"The authorities boast of running round the clock pharmacy centres for the benefit of the public. These centres punch holes in the poor man's pocket", they said. The authorities, sources added, are mulling to put at least two dozen surgical items and even some important drugs on sale in coming days. A doctor posted at the institute said that the decision with regard to putting the surgical items on sale has purely been taken by the head of the institute without considering the plight of poor patients. However repeated attempts to contact Director, SKIMS, Dr Showkat Zargar did not bear any fruit.
