State BJP still a divided house | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 19: The BJP which faced a rebellion last year after seven of its sitting MLAs cross voted in favour of Congress and NC in Legislative Council elections forcing the Party to disqualify these MLAs has not learned any lesson as yet as groupism is still prevailing in the state unit of the Party. Though the Party launched a vociferous campaign for the Jammu Municipal Committee elections in the city for last over a week, the ground realities reveal that Party has failed to keep its house in order as groupism still prevails in the state unit of the party. According to sources the state unit is divided in two groups with one group headed by Party state chief Shamsher Singh Manhas and another led by former president Dr Nirmal Singh are addressing the parallel Jan Samelans and the two parallel groups have failed to share the dais together for a long time. This can prove suicidal for the party which is already plagued with factionalism on grass root level after the disqualification of seven MLAs. The Party only sends official handouts for the functions organized by Shamsher Singh headed group while ignoring that led by Dr Nirmal Singh. When a reporter enquired from a BJP office bearer regarding the holding of two separate functions by the group headed by Manhas and another by Dr Singh, the official refuted to make any comment saying that he has no knowledge of the function organized by Dr Singh in the outskirts of Jammu City. It may be recalled that BJP chief organized the Jansamelan at Ward 21 in Gandhi Nagar area of the city while another Samelan was organized in Ward No 65, Barnai by Dr Nirmal Singh. The four Party MLAs identify themselves with the faction headed by Manhas and occasionally attend the functions organized by him. Among other Party leaders in this group included Dr Jitendra Singh, National Executive member and state chief spokesperson of the Party and Satish Sharma general secretary, sources said. Sources said the group led by Dr Nirmal Singh comprises of former MLA and vice president of the Party, Bali Bhagat, former Mayor JMC, Kavinder Gupta and Mahila Morcha senior leader and wife of Dr Nirmal Singh Mamta Singh. However one group is not aware of the programmes organized by another group and group led by Dr Singh organizes programmes on its own without taking the state president into confidence, sources added. Sources said such a sad state of affairs within the organization is slated to damage the party's poll prospects in the coming Municipal and Urban Local Bodies elections. However with the appointment Ashok Kaul a hardliner RSS man as full time organizational general secretary of the Party, a ray of hope has been generated among the party activists that he may be able to rope in both the factions in ending the present groupism and bringing them together. However the time can tell how far he will succeed in bringing the two factions together to put the united face of the party in the coming Municipal elections, sources added. Sources said the Party High Command is also seized of the situation and it has taken a serious note of the same. It is contemplating changes in the Party in state leadership and some national leaders are also visiting Jammu soon to discuss the situation with state leaders. |
