| 3 CRPF personnel killed, 5 others wounded in IED blast | | | Srinagar, Jan 23 At least three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and five others injured when militants triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Pulwama district of South Kashmir, this morning. The CRPF vehicle was targeted by the militants on Sangam-Pulwama road near Bandana, official sources informed. Details of the incident revealed that a Sawraj Mazda bearing registration number MH14V-7506 carrying CRPF personnel was on its way to Manzgam camp from Pulwama. “When the vehicle reached near Bandana militants triggered an IED with remote control blowing up the vehilce into pieces”, a senior police officer said. One constable was killed on the spot, while at least seven CRPF personnel, including driver of the vehicle, were critically wounded in the explosion. “Constable Ringh Thomas who was sitting on the front seat died on the spot, while seven others were wounded”, sources said. The injured CRPF personnel were immediately airlifted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science Srinagar, where two of them succumbed to their injuries. They were identified as Head Constable Ganesh Kumar and Driver SK Mishra. The injured jawans were identified as Constable Ajeet Kumar, Santosh Kumar, Prakash Nair, P Darinder and Shakeel Basia. Their condition was stated to be critical. Police said that entire area was cordoned off and searches were launched to track down the militants responsible for the attack. The operation was in progress, till the last report came in. Villagers alleged that following the blast, CRPF personnel cordoned off Brad Budana village and dragged the youth out of their house. While more a dozen youth were given severe thrashing, at least five residential houses of the villagers were set on fire, allegedly by the CRPF personnel. Senior officials from district administration and police rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Fire tenders were called from Bijbehara which controlled the fire. However, five houses were reduced to ashes before the fire could have been controlled. Meanwhile, unidentified militants lobbed a hand grenade towards a CRPF picket in Baramulla district of North Kashmir. As per an official spokesman, militants hurled a grenade towards a security picket at Bandipora town of Baramulla district, this morning. However, the grenade missed the intended target and exploded in an open area without causing any casualty or damage. IED Neutralized in Bandipora Srinagar, January 23: Police has averted a major tragedy in Bandipora by neutralizing an IED planted by militants. Militants also fired upon troops in Tral. Official sources revealed that unidentified gunmen believed to be the militants fired upon a patrol party of 173-Bn BSF at village Gamaraj under the jurisdiction of Police station Tral. Sources said that the fire was duly retaliated and area was immediately cordoned, however the militants managed to flee from the spot taking cover of darkness. No loss of life or injury to anyone was caused.
